Anybody else got these?

Postby rosey » 06 May 2013 20:13

I am working on the boot (trunk) of my fixed head and found these two plates pop riveted behind the number plate. They look factory fitted but were never painted and of course they eventually rusted and have holed the rear panel.
I can only think they were intended to strengthen the panel to support something being bolted there.

Another one of life's (TR7's) little mysteries. If only cars could talk.

Never seen these before. Doubt if they are original. Suspect they may have been added to reinforce an already holed / corroded area where the number plate screws went through. supercass

I am pretty sure that these were fitted by the factory or dealer as the mastic plugging the hole and the rivets were painted over perfectly with the black rear panel paint so you couldn't see the holes.

I am thinking fog lights, number plate lamps or rear facing anti-MG guns

Can't see that myselr, the number plate has always been mounted here, there are really no other places on a U.K. car where you could legally mount it, this thus precludes the mounting of any lights in the area. The area behind the number plate is suprizingly prone to corrosion, usually as a result of the number plate having been mounted with screws. the supplying dealer would rarely think to touch in the drilled area so water would run behhnd the plate and rust would take a hold. A problem usually compounded by later owners fitting new number plates and drilling new holes leaving the old ones in situ. The number plate screw holes on your car seem more towards the edges of the plate than the norm, whereas the rivetted plates are where you would normally expect number plates to be secured. An odd way of addressing the problem though. Also if you look closely the four drilled rivet holes are differently spaced on each plate, suggesting they are not factory parts. supercass

I chopped out the rot and plated them properly so they will not rot again, probably never know why they were there.

According to bar charts in the auto magazines of the day.

Going from Highway #101 to highway #1 on the twisty bits the MGB behind me wanted to know if I had a 6 cylinder in the car as he couldn't keep up with me.....and he was a professional truck driver (18 wheeler).[8D]
