Indicator & wiper switchgear

Reading through some old TR7 stuff recently I saw a reference to the fact that a few very late production cars had different indicator & wiper switchgear on the steering column, possibly like that used on early Austin Mini Metro?

Does anyone know if that is true, or has anyone ever seen this switchgear on a TR7?

Or is it just another urban myth ....[:)]

Tony - My DHC 2.0l had Metro switchgear when a replacement TR7 unit was unobtainable. It worked, but the 'angle' was all wrong and some of the cowl needed cutting away to accomodate it....

Pretty sure DTJ191Y [1981] is standard TR7 and not Metro.

Thanks Andrew.

I did look at a set of Metro switchgear once at some autojumble, out of curiosity, & it did strike me at the time that the angle of the stalks was wrong for the TR7, seems like that is borne out by your experience with your DHC.

So it probably is just an urban myth or has derived from aftermarket fitments such as you had.

The latest FHC I have owned was 8130, within the last 100 made, it had the Metro indicator/light stalks. They looked right but John Wood, the owner after me, will know if they were original equipment. If production had continued, the 1982 model year cars would have featured the Metro stalks.

Ah! That's interesting Chris.

Mr Wood - tell us more! Any difference from the Metro stalks in the way they were mounted on the TR7? Got any pictures?

<font size="2"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Now I've been told the Metro stalks are whats used in the MGF, now some of the MGF blokes are using Land Rover Freelander 1 stalks.
So maybe they may in turn fit the TR-7?
As I will be changing the steering wheel in the MGF soon, I should do a comparison with the TR-7 and see in those two are interchangeable.</font id="Comic Sans MS"></font id="size2">

Hi Tony,

My DHC has later 'Metro' switch gear, like Andrew had to replace the wiper switch when I brought her as broken, but could only get a Metro switch which has slightly different angle, a couple of quick picture -

The other thing you may or may not of noticed the switches are the other way around [:0] Often find myself turning the wipers on when jumping from my FHC to the DHC [:o)] [:I]

With reference to the last photo and off topic.

Below the dash, what's the control with copper piping? Is it part of the braking system?

You have a different choke knob. Is it from a different car? I ask because I'm on my 3rd choke cable and would to find one that will defy the return spring on the carbs longer than a few months before slipping.

Hi Mike,

Done a rear disc conversion on this car, fitted a Wedge Shop 50 / 50 brake proportioning valve block so I could play with the brake balance front to rear I also installed a inline proportioning valve, could have put this under the bonnet but ease of 'fiddling' ran a couple of pipes into the cabin.

Must admit the choke cable was on the car when I got it, poss a another change on late car's as seen similar on others [?] Never gets used nowaday as the Edelbrock carb will start no problem with just a couple of kicks of the accelerator pedal.

So, the switchgear stalks were like those in John's picture? The TR7 never had the chunkier stalks that appeared on the early Metro?

Hi Tony,

These switches were used on other car's in the BL stable ( like lots of bits !!! ) They were on Itals for certain and I think poss some Mini's and poss Amabassdors [?]
