When should I tax my car for the summer?

With the weather as it is I think May 1st is the day to get the car out of the garage for the summer.

Its not raining at the moment and we have had nearly a week of dry weather in the west midlands so I think its as good as its going to get!
Remember last June July and August were not exactly brilliant were they?
I think we were bloody lucky at the TR weekend at Malvern to only have that shower on the Saturday and a bit of drizzle on the Sunday morning.

Lets face it. The weather in this country is all over the place and the only safe option is to tax year round so you can enjoy the best days of the year whenever they come. If you don't tax April you'll miss Drive it day when quite a few classic car events are organised. Nobody likes paying their road tax but at appox £5 a week it is one of the cheaper aspects of driving a TR7/8!

tax all year its nice to grab the odd nice day here and there in the autumn, winter and sping.
with tax exception it will soon catch up with our cars if it contiues after the last budget change we can all enjoy year long motoring.

You've got nothing to complain about Cobber. Registration for the 8 down there in Vic was under $500 PA, up here in Qld it is $960.

roughly GBP 60 for a full year...

$85 a year here for registration, 10 times that for insurance. We have an option for "Historic Vehicle" license plates with a small one-time charge and free renewal, but you're limited to parades and shows and such.

I pay $270 a year with preagreed value of $10,000 for Collector Plates (reg and insurance). I can put two more vehicles under these plates (at no cost as I can only drive one at a time) but have to have a daily driver insured. Can't drive it to school (retired), can't drive it to work (retired), that's what the daily driver is for, other than that no restrictions. I can drive it to grocery store, the pub (not to get drunk [:p]), or to Disneyland (which I've done), or cross continent to Disney World (which I haven't).

Our registration fee includes compulsory third party injury insurance, covering the car for any injury it may cause to passengers or other people.

You can get a policy for third party property damage it may cause for about $90PA , or a full comprehensive policy covering the car & any damage it may cause. The cost of this for the 7, agreed value $10000 is $290PA, for the Honda S2000 agreed value $26000 is $620PA, & the 8 agreed value $20000 is $690PA.

For a $20000 new shopping trolley, comprehensive insurance is about $500PA, & yes not only are cars expensive to buy in Oz, but other costs are high also, although at $1.40 a liter petrol is not too bad.

Off the topic a little but, while our costs are a higher than US (we get much of our gasoline on the west coast from the States) it is cheaper than Australia at $1.22/liter in Australian dollars.

We get our gas from Washington State Cherry Point refinery but even the fire damage to the refinery in California this past year has a ripple effect up the coast reaching BC like a shock wave from an earthquake. I wonder if that will change if we get the proposed refinery on the coast to ship refined products from oil sands to China rather than crude oil? The problem with that is developing nations want the refineries in their back yard so refined products aren't in demand as much as crude oil which can be bought from many places. We have a refinery in Burnaby but it is old and can only refine so much.

I really enjoy hearing about registrations and road tax for TR7's and 8's around the world. It's interesting to see how things can vary depending on location.

Here is Wisconsin, a collector plates can be obtained for any vehicle 20 years of age or older, provided you do have a second vehicle with regular plates (i.e., daily driver). The <i><b>one-time fee</b></i> is twice the cost of the annual registration which for any passenger vehicle is $75. Thus for $150, I can drive the TR7 as long as I own it for no additional registration fees or taxes.

The only restriction is the vehicle cannot be driven in January (about the coldest and snowiest month of the year so I wouldn't be driving it anyway); however, for a flat $30 you can get a temporary permit to drive it even in January.

There is no restriction on mileage, or where you drive it to (work, school, etc.). Likewise in Wisconsin, expect in the Milwaukee area, there is no emissions testing.

Compared to most of the other rates and fees already posted, I feel pretty lucky to drive our TR7 pretty cheaply.
