Boot / Trunk Lining - Triumph TR7 / TR8

Beans Is that a ABS plastic guard that you have fabricated to protect the fender in your trunk? It does not appear to be a stock item. My car did not have anything like that in the trunk area.

Has anyone tried the boot trim kit advertised on the S&S website? Not cheap at £200+ and obviously not original, but it looks like they solve the poor appreance of the standard boot lining. Pictures are on their photo gallery tab. I have a birthday approaching......

My boot liners (bulk head and bottom) while in really good shape had some wear through of the vinyl in a few creases where you could see the backing. I put some black vinyl repair stuff on the the spots (the kind you heat up to cure) and stipple it a bit to match surface for an invisible patch.

Hi Tony, you seem to have an encyclopaedic knowledge. No doubt you will be hearing a great deal from me. You are spot on with the lamp covers. They are OK but I will re-shape the edge of the top horizontal flap to get a very neat fit and pop in a plastic button. The bulkhead lining wasn't too difficult to fit and the four buttons across the top good quite good.

I am in the process of adding new trim to the cockpit of my car. On the inside I have used acoustic carpet and the finish looks rather nice. So I was looking at doing the same for the boot. I see that TR7 boot lining kits can be brought, but I was thinking of making my own so that I could put the carpet on it.

Has anyone made their own boot lining or have anyone got the measurements for a template to be made? I know I can measure them myself, but if someone has this to hand and it fits perfect, why not make use of it 

I made my own for the yellow FHC. It was a fun project, and not too costly. Some ideas that have worked for me include making a new spare cover from plywood (embossed with TR7 logo), creating an access panel for the lights, using sound deadening material, and led strip lighting. A craft store supplied a corrugated plastic sheet, spray glue (super 777?), and of course carpet from a local shop. I made templates of the shapes needed, then cut large and trimmed once installed. I suggest you should give it a try and enjoy a project. If it doesn't meet your grade, you can purchase one from S&S.

If you still have the original lining panels but they just look tatty you could recover them. I did this and am pleased with the results. I used stretch carpet and spray contact adhesive, a doddle to use and I also applied this to the wheel arches and around the fuel filler access panel. I also used the boot floor and back panel original but tatty carpet as a template to make new from a black carpet remnant, turning these over and gluing at the edge then gluing thin soundproofing material on the back. I manufactured a small panel in carpet for the area between the lights behind the number plate. I used thin non fraying car floor carpet purchased from a discount store on the back of the boot lid which I glued in place. Finishing off exposed nuts with nut caps completes the job. An estimated total cost of about £40. If you were to buy a new cardboard boot panel set and recover these it would still cost less than £100 and gives a finish that appears much more complete than the ready made carpet sets.

I did mine, normally you can pick up good carpet for this job at auto jumbles, some hard board and spray contact glue and its done !

Here is our effort on the car we recently restored. This was done using automotive carpet and contact adhesive purchased from an auto jumble stand and backing boards that we made using the tired originals as templates. The boot floor mat has a layer of carpet underlay glued onto the back to give some stiffness and sound deadening quality. Total cost in materials was less than £50.

Thanks for that guys, seeing your results I think I will have to give it a go. The back and the sides should be UK to do, as I have the side light protectors that will hold everything on. I think the back piece will be fine too. However, the bit causing me a slight bit of concern is the section that will go over the light cluster. That looks like it will be a bit tricky.

For those of you wishing to keep it original: My liner pretty much looked like new but there were a few places were the plastic was either gouged or cracked at a fold such that the matting beneath could be seen. I spread some black vinyl repair paste on the area and cured with heat gun and tool that comes with kit. The black cardboard light guards had cracked at the folds revealing the brown beneath. These I sprayed with black rock guard paint and 10 years on is still like it was just done.
