Canvas roof weeps??

Postby manny » 04 Mar 2013 06:30

Good day all,

have any DHC owners experienced the inside of the top weeping during\after consistent rain. My whole internal top was covered in suspended water droplets, when i had to park in outside for a week, my whole interior was simply wet all over- not puddles but damp and lots of it. Is this normal after extended rainfall over 3/4 days - can i treat it?

Cheers

Manny

Hi Manny,

I've had exactly the same problem myself. Its caused by rising condensation, its not coming through the roof.

My DHC is outside and under a very good quality car cover, but the moisture is coming from below, rising and condensing, resulting in as you've said suspended water droplets, so for me (as mine is parked on soil) I put down a large sheet of polythene which has stopped the problem.

Cheers,
Dave

May also be caused by water leaking in elsewhere, evaporating when the weather is warmer and then condensing on the roof. A half cover just for the hood (roof) may help. Even quite expensive later models of BMW's and Mercedes convertibles have problems with water ingress. supercass

Even the best double duck canvas, & mohair will wick moisture through after a period. this is why army tents had a tent fly over the top of, but not touching, the main tent material.

Without the fly, just running a finger along the inside of the best canvas would start water oosing through when wet.

Some time back I found the 8 hood was only slowing the rain down, definitely not stopping it. This was the first time it had been wet in a few years, & although as new, was more a strainer than a roof.

My local hood bloke recommended 303 hood treatment. After one spray, everywhere, & 2 sprays on stitching lines, the hood is totally watertight.

303 is a US company with very good products. If not available, there are a number of waterproofing sprays, of varying quality on the market. Do take care, some do not give a nice appearance.

Hasbeen.

Renovo do a waterproofer that is effective, probably more easily available in the U.K. supercass

Two different conclusions
internal condensation....or
treat hood....which wont help the condensation??

OK....time to do a soak through experiment- as the car is now indoors.

Thanking all

Manny

Three, third one being leaking elsewhere, evaporating and condensing on hood, you would need to find the leak. The top edge of the quarter lights is a common one. supercass
