Door Mirrors

Postby Maxwell » 18 Feb 2013 19:23

Can anyone advise whether the TR7 ever came with chrome door mirrors, or were they always black?

Black indeed, but you can use the stainless steel/chromium plated variant used on many many other cars.
You only have to (chromium) plate the base, which being a rather poor quality alloy, can be tricky.
And yes it has been done [:p]

Put some weight in the boot [:D]

I was glad when I fitted her with longer springs, shortly after that picture was taken.

"Put some weight in the back"

If you do this make sure you Gag her or she'll scream louder than a viscous coupling on its way out

The exact shape base and top that was used on the TR7 was available in stainless steel and chrome. (stainless top, chrome plated base.) Regards, supercass

Yes, and the key word is was
- the shape of the 'stem' part have changed over the years.
The one currently available from Tex Automotive is truly different
from the one used 30+ years ago...
Image

So the ideal mirror to fit onto the Wedge is an amagamation of two mirrors:
The modern day (convex anti-dazzle glass) stainless mirror head (with its vastly improved friction/ball unit), and
the then mirror stem (since it holds the mirror slightly aft and less obscured by the window frame)

The difference in pivot ball design can be seen here:

And here you can see all the different holders they've tried over the years. The only GOOD one is my personal (will outlive the car) stainless design... [8D]
