Locking petrol cap

Postby lancsman » 18 Feb 2013 21:01

Was there ever a locking cap available for the early Speke built FHC's either from the factory or aftermarket?

If there was, does anyone know where they might still be available?

Thanks.

Yes, there was. I have one. It's on the car. However, a prior owner buggered around with it damaging the mechanism so it can't lock. This is a good thing as it also has no key. But, it is far more decorative than the plain gas cap.

Indeed there was a very good locking cap for the large filler cap cars that was sold in the States, although I think it was an aftermarket item.

It has a rotating flap to cover the key hole with the BL logo on it, looks like a factory part! I bought one NOS off Ebay USA a couple of years ago, that's probably the only place you may find one now.

Won't affect you in UK but the locking gas caps are UK/EU versions which means they are not sealed like we have in N/A. That means our sealed systems then have a leaking vacuum (unless emissions stuff is removed and sealed off). Friend had one of those on his 1979 car and could smell gas from it so took it off and put a sealed regular N/A one back on. Might not be so noticeable with a coupe.

Hi,

Not over keen on locking fuel caps personaly, another potential place water can get into the tank, maybe only a little every time in rains or washed etc but it all adds up to a rotten tank. Only one I would fit is the type my learned friend Tony descibes, ie covers the lock barrel.

Cheers John

This sounds interesting. Any chance of a photo when you have a minute?

Thanks to all for the replies so far.
