To find the previous owners - fill in a V888 & sent 5 pounds to get all from the DVLA.

Release of another vehicle’s keeper details
You can obtain the name and address of the registered keeper of another vehicle if you can demonstrate ‘reasonable cause’ for needing the information. Before information is released the DVLA must consider the reasons for your request and how the information will be used. Failure to provide the necessary evidence or incomplete application forms will result in your application being rejected.

More about 'reasonable cause'

Note; it’s an offence to unlawfully obtain personal data that’s contrary to Section 55 of the Data Protection Act 1998. Unlimited fines in the Crown Court (or to a maximum of £5,000 in the Magistrates Court) exist as penalties in respect of these offences.

There are three forms that can be used to request information. You should use the appropriate form depending on who you are and your reasons for asking for information and also read the notes for guidance carefully before answering all the necessary questions:

•the V888 - for members of the public
•the V888/2 - request for information by a business
•the V888/3 - request for information for those who issue a parking charge notice
All car parking companies who require vehicle keeper details to contact drivers, who may have failed to comply with conditions for parking, have to provide evidence that a parking charge scheme is in operation and they are acting on behalf of the landowner. Companies have to confirm that they are members of an Accredited Trade Associate which has a mandatory code of practice that all members must adhere to.

The required fee
The fee for vehicle keeper information at a specific date of event is £2.50. If further information is required e.g. a copy of a document or additional keeper information, a fee of £5.00 is required per vehicle. The fee is payable to cover the costs of providing the information.

Once the form is completed send it with any necessary documents to:

Regarding the vin No on righthand side of boot gutter rail,I could not see mine.
Chap I know told me to run some wet and dry along the underneath and then use a mirror and a torch to see the image - worked brilliantly as the mirror turned the reversed image around!
Thought it worth a mention.

Hi guys hope all is well in the TR member would! apart from the naff weather :-(!! remember me the chassis /vin plate chap lol :-) I did what Neil w suggested with regard to the V888 form to the DVLA and that came up trumps with the original number being TCG114020 !! it was the previous owner who changed it in 1994 the only reason is the old couple I bought it off had some work done on it an the plate got mislaid and he must of bought the car without the V5 doc! to warrant a new number because the original number was there on the previous owner to them, so now my task is to get the tr7 registered back to its birth number!! If anyone has done this bit before be cool to know you got on with that ;-) will keep you posted thanks again for all the suggestions ;-)

Hi Craig - good news you have got the information required - £ 5 well spent.
If I were you I would take all the copies of all documentation to your local DVLA Ofice before they shut down - phoning Swansea is a nightmare.

A friend of mine imported a TR7 from South Africa & had a VIN Plate problem too - the local DVLA were really helpful once he had all the evidence / paperwork backing up the story.

Remember it is not the Swansea folk but the system which causes the problems - once a human sees the documents it could be straight forward to reassign the original Reg No.

'TCG', TR7 coupe for home market, Europe and Australia. TCG 100001 to 114122 (Oct 78 to Oct 79) so yours was one of the last 100 for model year 1979.

You can buy blank VIN Plates still http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID005970 ( from other suppliers such as S+S,James Paddock & Robsport too ) & info to be stamped on it from http://www.triumph-cars.co.uk/tr7-tr78- ... ained.html

Think you need the smaller plate type which I think goes on the drivers door - not into early models but others on here will confirm.
Later models had it on the offside suspension turret.

Maybe if your car had a new drivers door the plate went AWOL [?]

Hi Craig,

As long as you can now prove all is correct with your VIN numbers etc you sholdn't have too many issues with getting your number back again (did the same with one of my cars last October).
I have always found it better to talk to someone face to face so I visited my local DVLA centre in Chelmsford and within quarter of an hour I had filed in all the forms and transfered the plate to another car and got my proper plate back.
I had all of the log books, Tax discs and permission to get new number plates in less than a week.

Hi all just an update on the Vin number issue with my TR7,I had a letter from the Dvla saying that they need to inspect the vehicle to see the original TCG114020 number stamped on it so they can then re issue the number back!! I explained to them that it has a VRO issue number but they want to see the original number stamped somewhere on the vehicle as proof what a pain :-( I gave them loads of info on it, just hoping there is a clue when I strip it fingers crossed!! Thanks again for all the valued advice :-)

My car is a Canley build,has the chassis No on the r/hand side boot gutter.Use a torch and a mirror and you will pick up the numbering from underneath the gutter.

I would love to see the DVLA do that on a Speke shell. I have never seen a chassis number ever stamped on the body of a TR7 pre 1979.
