I sold the car on and beleive still on the road, the owner who purchased my car sold it on Ebay a few years back so lost contact Now.

The runt of the litter.. cheapest TR8 sold, WAC275S. Severe High Mileage Programme. Still has all original panels except one rear wing and the bootlid (result of a rear end collision whilst parked). Pictured in 2010.

Steve,

Notice on your original picture the rear tyre as a white wall ring.


Agree with chris car in excellant condition, remember the cra going on the biling road run and using a tank fall of petrol.

Billing Road Run was stressful as it was literally the first run out after conversion to rally spec. Only moted the day before and overheating too. The engine has been rebuilt by John Eales since then. It still needs a lot of fettling and improving.

I still have the wheels and a couple have the whitewall ring tyres on. Everything in unpleasant condition though! Wheels are dated 1980 if I remember correctly. I have only driven the car a handful of times this year and no hillclimb/sprints unfortunately. Maybe next year.

One more interesting thing gleaned from the auction catalogues is that in amongst all the dross (Allegro, Ital, Princess, etc) BL punted out over one hundred standard newly registered TR7's. They must have been registered on the same day roughly in the series KON 870W through KON 970W. BL finances must have been in a particularly parlous state in August 1981!

O Series,

Yes to info on the 2 valve fleet and if you got any info on the 4 valve fleet that would be excellent, do you have by any chance pictures from this period of history?

I notice a couple of cars were used with the O Series 4 valve engine. Was that known as the M16?

I was looking through an old copy of the TRDC magazine last night, found an article by Mike Collins talking about what might be needed to convert a standard 2L car to the O series engine. Rather generalised in nature, not exactly detailed instructions but it did suggest other BL vehicles of the time that could be used to donate the other parts required to make it all fit.

And then having a browse of eBay & up pops a never used Gold Seal O series engine still on packing it's pallet for sale!

Curiously the article also says that Gaydon has got a TR7 with an O series engine in it. Anyone know if that is true?

Hi Tony,

Saw that O series too, could be a FWD version cant remember if it had a dizzy mount on it. You would also need a guess a Sherpa O series 5 speed bell housing too.

Steve and the lads up at S & S had one with a M16 in it, a bright yellow car, last time I saw her she had a TP V8 in her.

Unless there is another car in the collection we don't know about then the Gaydon O Series engined car is the Broadside convertible.

Canley Engineering do seem to have had a lot of cars passing through their hands, quite a few appear to have low miles on them. Must have had a big garage to keep them all in [:)]

Going back to Mike Collins article about converting a 7 to O series power, it is in the TRDC mag Edition 4, 1996.

Briefly, he suggests the engine from a Montego 2L GTi with loom and ancillaries, an SD1 2L to donate engine mounting brackets & rubbers plus the engine backplate & sump, and the exhaust manifold. Probably would have been easy to find parts back in 1996, not so easy now I suspect!

Very rarely were any of the development cars garaged. The disposal lists have cars stored on various car parks around the site, and some stored off site at other BL factories, or at suppliers such as Dunlop.

Yeah that figures, must have been someone's full time job to keep track of where each car was. "Now where did I park that TR8? I was sure it was this car park. Hey guys, anyone seen ......"

On a more serious note, quite a few of the cars are listed as being used for "Environmental Chamber Testing" or "Hot & Cold Chamber Testing". Can anyone shed any light on the difference between these two types of testing? How did Environmental differ from Hot & Cold? Or are they in fact two descriptions of the same thing?
