Exhaust paste?

I have some nicely reconditioned cast manifolds to fit on my TR8 to replace the cracked ones it has at present. I'm unsure whether to install them dry with just the gaskets or to also use assembly paste. I don't really want white paste splodging all over my lovely grey manifolds but I also don't want to have to remove them again if they leak. What's the best way for a clean job with no leaks?

From an Engineering prespective - if the recon manifold is square ie flat & the cylinderhead face is flat you shouldn't need any paste.
A good quality gasket will seal the faces when bolted up.
Use copper based 'coppaslip' on the studs though when assembled.

The original exhaust manifolds didn't have gaskets just bare metal to bare metal, only the FI cars did although it's recommended to put gaskets on if you have the manifold off. So with that in mind, unless your manifold is warped you shouldn't have any problems with just gaskets.

Hi Andy,

When I bought my V8 conversion kit from S&S, they advised me to fit their tubular exhaust manifolds to the heads with RTV paste and <u>no</u> gaskets.

Over 20 years and they're still leak free.

Never needed to use any paste on any manifolds I have ever fitted, would certainly use copperslip on all threads though, I know how lovley and original your car is so not really applicable but a head to manifold studs make life easier.

Andy,

I have four branch manifolds which I do use gaskets to make the seal - I have never found that I have needed to add any sort of exhaust goo to help.

The only thing, in agreement with John is to use copperslip on the studs and if you can get hold of them brass full nuts.

Getting there health wise, recovering from a heart attack I had in August, but hope to get some jobs done on the car soon and get out and about in it in the summer (if we get one!!).

Thanks for all the replies, looks like I'll be just using gaskets. I have some new brass nuts to attatch the downpipes as well. [:)]
