My persistence and patience paid off. Today I got back under the dash and went back at it. I found that with some persuading I was able to get all four holes matched up. After putting some clear sealant on the back of the vents I put them back in place, lined them up and got them pop-riveted in place. The new vinyl panels were another story, but I managed to get them in place and everything buttoned up. If I had it to do over again, I would paint the vents black, but it is not at all obvious from the seats.

Looks to me you've turned them upside down...
The originals have their hinges in the lower part and opens up->out, probably to increase and not obstruct the airflow

The instructions say to install them hing up. When the flap goes up, they go all the way up and rest against the inside panel. I attached a big piece of weather stripping to the back so that it wouldn't bang against the body if it touches. Do the originals rest against the outside body panel?

No, they stop slightly short of the outer panel.

As these vents are so difficult to find original, there´s always the option of making them yourself, as i have done, an at a fraction of the price of the reproduction ones and i believe they may even have a better flow than the originals. BUT, they took some time to make!
I can send images if anybody is interested in the idea, if i can fetch them amongst all my, aging, TR7 boxed parts.

It would seem to me that with hinge up they would be out of the way when open whereas with the hinge at the bottom they would be in the way of your feet even if the opened all the way so they are resting on the carpet. Never actually looked at a set, something to check at next car show in the spring.

Mine are hinged at the front, & open into the inner guard area.

Had to shut the drivers side yesterday, for the first time ever.

I've found that with the small cabin, I could leave it open in hot weather, & still get enough cool from the air conditioning. Not so yesterday. I was getting intermittent swirls of cold air then hot air. I guess the hot air coming up off the black road is just too much this year.

Yep, you can kick them open with your big toe. The handle looks like you should be able to hook it with your toe to pull it closed too but I think that my feet are way too big for that. I have to lean over and grab it to pull it closed.

Here's another picture of a genuine oem fitment. It's the one and only TR7 sold new in Sweden (sold new in 2006 no less!):

Here you can see part of the hinge and spring system holding the flap open/closed.
In my earlier post you can see a closed flap, showing the hook/handle you operate with your foot.

Must be a couple of different designs over the years. Mine, on the '79 DHC, are like Hasbeen's. Hinges on the side.
