Paint Code Cross Reference found

Postby Vegas_M » 12 Dec 2012 00:59

After a long search, I found this great paint cross reference at the Dupont historical color library.

Direct to Triumph colors (oops, I mean colours):

It works, but it seems like they ran out of colours except for white [:D]

Wow - link works for me, under the various 6 digit codes there is just about every colour.

Great find [:)]

If you are having trouble with the above link, try this one:

http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/visitor/b/dr/s/color/hcl.html

Scroll to the bottom of the page and select the "Launch the DuPont Refinish Historical Color Chip Library" link.

I've seen this before but it just has the general (common) colours used across the Triumph line and not some of the colours that were specific to the TR7. A bit of trivia: for those who don't know, in Canada we use British spelling, not American spelling which often drops letters in words. In actual practice we often use both.[:p]

If you check the Sherwin Williams color library here:

http://sw.formulaexpress.com/Search/VehicleSearchPage.aspx

And only select Triumph, you can get the color/colour codes for pretty much every color - except Maraschino of course..

The other ones referenced before, Argent, Silver Leaf, and Platinum are there. I can vouch that their Poseidon Green Metallic is a perfect formula match, even when using their formula with another manufacturers paint. If they can cross reference to Sherwin-Williams, you are all set.

I'd check the Sherwin Williams color library very carefully to be sure you have the right colour formula. They don't list Triumph code GCC Midas Gold (although they do list it for Rover cars) and incorrectly list Russet Brown as code AAC which is for Maple. Russet is AAE.

I didn't check further, but with all old paint mixtures, it is always best to verify the colour of the mix against a non-faded sample from the car, before you let someone paint with it. [:D]

Impressed with Sherwin list, even have Tumeric Yellow (only used in 1979). When clicking on the code it comes up with a bunch of stuff, not sure what it all means but much of it is to be discontinued Dec. 2012. Best bet seems to be cut polish a bit of paint to get to non faded colour and get it read.

And what's with Maraschino Black? Seems to be BL's best kept secret. There's probably a long forgotten old safe from BL tucked away in the back of someones garage with the top secret formula in it.

The discontinued stuff looks to be their high VOC content items based on the product sheets for the actual paint lines. They can still move the formula to another product line. I used a Sherwin-Williams mixing code to get my Poseidon mixed in Pro-Spray base coat. It's the mixing codes that are important.

The PPG color chip book code for Maraschino Black is 9472 under manufacturer code 373. Took a while to hunt that one up. It's only listed in PPG's chip book that I can find.

Some tears ago i had some Platinum paint made up. We looked up the Dupont catalogue under Triumph but it didn´t appear till we looked up the Rover colours, MCA Platinum cross reference now is Rover 45025 (The Rover 216 apparently was one of the last cars to use this colour)

You know George, I found quite by accident when I was hunting for Poseidon Green Metallic that it cross references perfectly to the 2006-2007ish Jaguar Racing Green Metallic. Exact same mixing codes. It was also used with the same formula on some Rover vehicles which isn't too surprising.

I had trouble getting a good cross reference on the original Poseidon, and we finally figured out that it truly was the exact same formula. I've seen several of the colors that were reused by Rover and Jaguar over the years, though only found it all by accident.
