Problems with Rimmers yet again!!

Postby Dave Dyer » 22 Nov 2012 17:09

Hi all,

I placed an order with Rimmers to get the 15% discount and even had it sent to the Classic car show to collect it to save more money, so far all good!

But when I got home and checked it I found they had sent me a TR7 throttle cable instead of a TR8 one! I emailed and the reply said no the item I had was a TR8 item!! So I re emailed and told them to look at the picture of the TR8 throttle cable on their website and compare it to the attached photo I sent them of the cable they sent me. They replied to say send it back! No explanation, no appology, who pays for the return postage etc very poor customer service, by someone on the end of a PC who doesn't have a clue whats going on.

I have used James Paddock (they offer free postage) occasionally and an odd time with S & S and Robsport, but from now on Rimmers will no longer get my business. I'm starting to realise (possibly as I'm getting older!) that customer care is the most important thing and the 3 suppliers I've just mentioned are able to offer that!

I'm annoyed that they insisted they had sent me the right cable and I had to convince them it was wrong. They don't know what they are selling!

OK Rant over, thanks for 'listening' Guys.

Cheers, Dave

If you want a stock TR8 throttle cable, Rick at S & S had some made up. I bought one earlier this year & it was spot on. [:)]

Hi Dave,

Your story is the exact reason why I only use Rimmers as a last resort. If you phone, email or speak to the gents at Robsport or S&S you know that they know exactly what you need. Also more often than not cheaper. And to top it all do you get a free brew at Rimmers [?] no i dont think so [:p]

Cheers John

But they have a good website to garner information/pictures.[:p]

I'm afraid it's the case with any large organization with "order takers" on the phone. Similar to Victoria British over here but when you go with smaller organizations like British Parts Northwest (and others) your're more likely to get customer service (and sometimes candy thrown into the order for good measure).[:)]

I think I only ordered one order from Rimmers during their "up to 70% off" winter sale a few years ago. I got a bunch of stuff marked down, mostly stuff for Yellow TCT, about $1,700 worth of stuff and the only thing they screwed up was three spin on filters instead of three cartridge filters. Not too bad considering the big order. Now will have to do TCT/Spider with an adapter or sell the filters.

Rimmers is a major organization and it is therefore impossible for them to get everything right all the time. I've had one or two issues in the past myself but when you go over there and see the scale of the operation the odd problem is understandable. I tend to get everything from Robsport and have done for about 15 years now but occasionally I do deal with Rimmers and this year I even used them for a pair of new door skins for our Mini Cooper. Received very good service which I find in general is unusual from a big company.

But the best thing about Rimmers is they had the foresight and appreciation of Triumph cars to stock up on everything they could before it was all gone. As an example I can tell you the Stag Owners Club have invested in reproducing the cylinder heads for the Stag. A set of these 'Millennium Heads' will cost you around £2.5k but Rimmers have got brand new cylinder heads for the TR7 - loads of 'em - and there to keep our cars on the road long into the future. Yes, these heads are un-milled but the point is they had them manufactured when the original supplier was still able to do them and stuck them on their shelves probably around 25 years ago. A tour around the warehouse reveals loads of TR7 parts that would probably be long gone if it wasn't for their storage capacity.

I would recommend any complaints or problems should be brought to their attention just so they know all is not perfect. I'm sure they will listen and where necessary apologise or make amends.

By the way, Bill and Graham do frequent this web site and read posts like this so they'll probably find out sooner or later. They're still Triumph enthusiasts so have full interest in the business they started in 1982.

I've got to chip in to say that I greatly respect and support Rimmer's for the effort they have made in providing an e-commerce capability that has made it easier for offshore customers to access the parts needed to maintain our wedges.

I also greatly respect and support Robsport and S&S for their personalised service and greater understanding of my needs when I need to call/email to deal with specific requirements.

I tend to spread my orders across all of these suppliers as I want them all to keep meeting our needs.

I realise Rimmers is a major organisation, but it wasn't always that way, I visited them in 1984 when they were both running things from an old building with a dozen TR7s outside in a yard, they had the personal enthusiastic touch. But for the last few years they've stepped back and let people who were probably selling shoes in their previous job take over. Therefore the people who you deal with no longer know what they are actually selling.

I was told that the throttle cable I received was a TR8 one and even when I sent a photo of what they sent, they still didn't accept it. I felt I had a hard job to convince someone they had sold me the wrong item.

But if because they are a big organisation its impossible to get everything right all of the time, then there should be something in place to sort it, They don't have a customer help line/email address so theres no way of letting them know when a problem arises.

Over the years I've had a lot of problems with them when buying spares and once I took them a reconditioned Triumph 2500 gearbox, they said they would give me £80, when I turned up they gave me £30, I had travelled 125miles so had to except it. They then advertised in practical classics mag for £125!

But one thing I can't understand, I've been told to send the throttle cable back, because they must have a faulty batch in stock and I can have a refund, but they still have the throttle cable advertised on their website, surely they would remove them, unless they think I'm wrong and offering me a refund is the best thing for them!!

Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,

I had a similar experience when I bought an uprated TR7/8 m/cylinder and servo combo when on special offer. The reservoir was cracked and I jumped through a few hoops getting it replaced and then obtaining the exchange fee for my used TR7 m/cylinder and servo. However they paid for all the return carriage.

At S&S, Robsport and James Paddock(not so popular for 7's maybe but still good) you may only deal with one or two people at most. Rimmers have departments involving many people and unfortunately communication breaks down at times. However, they have invested in the catalogues and on line parts explosion diagrams straight out of the parts books. Their website also allows for 24/7 ordering over the net.

(I favour the 40 mile each way drive in the 7V8 through the countryside to collect the parts from Robsport myself [:)], a drive to S&S would just be too hard on the pocket [:(] )
