New Rally Car. So it begins.

Hi everyone. The time has come to begin work on a new shell for the rally car. I need as much info in one place as possiible. I have amassed a large library of info over the last 10 years but there is still things I don't know.
I am not limited buy the English historic rules , in Oz the rules are much more liberal. I have pics from the Metal guru thread that are very helpful.
One thing I am really interested in is the decal type and location on the British Airway car of Pond. I will be running 15" wheels so am considering a paint scheme the same as when the works card used them. I am not sure what that is exactly.

I am not buding a car that will be passed off as ex works in any way, it will be a tribute to these cars with the necessary improvements to make it fast and reliable in modern. Rallying.
Looking forward to replies and once I start in the next couple of weeks I will start a build thread.

Looks like we're more or less on the same track [;)]
But I'll stick to the Sprint but with modern injection and ignition.
I like the challenge of engineering as much as possible myself ...
Probably 5 or 6 link back axle. rest of the suspension is sorted more or less.
Paint scheme will be loosely based on the works cars ... very loosely.

I started in my weblog already ...

What are you doing with the old one Troy? Is it to stay a car, as a spare, or another to loan to young club members, or will it be cannibalized in building the new one?

The current car will be stripped and the running gear will go into the new car. That shell will then be checked over and restored as a spare shell. I will possible build it as a sprint in the current paint scheme and my young blokes may use it as there introduction to Motorsport.

A week to late [:(] Spent 4 days at the end of last week feet away from SJW 548S, and could took every measurement you coluld have wanted. Note the chassis plate, listed as a ' Sprint ' [8D]

This sounds like an exciting new project - looking forward to an extensive thread here on this.

Given Craig Haysman's success in Targa Adelaide 2012 ([url="http://www.rallyresults.com.au/targa/sta2012/oc_final.pdf"]1st in Classic Outright[/url] and [url="http://www.rallyresults.com.au/targa/sta2012/m_final.pdf"]5th fastest time overall[/url]) driving the [url="http://www.triumphroverspares.com.au/page.asp?parentid=40&productid=254"]Ian Wilson built TR7 V8[/url], it's got to be a reference point. I hope Neil might post more info on this car.

Would the liberal rules you mention accommodate cutting out the whole floor plan, rear bulkhead and boot floor, ready to accept an IRS setup that ties the front and rear longitudinal rails more effectively and provide a flat underside with channels for some ground effect on tarmac? Perhaps I'm dreaming, but the inspiration is from mods I came across on a Mk2 Escort.

Hi Troy,

One thing i did notice, is the engine features a late cross bolted block, at first i thought it was a rare crossbolted early block but didnt have the holes drilled for the outer head bolts in the block, not that these should be fitted anyway. This plate was opposite side to the chassis number, plug gap seams a little small !

Hi Hugh.

The block on the rally car had the bolts in the side of the block, as the late 4.0 and 4.6 blocks, it also missing the outer row of head bolts, as late blocks, at a guess it is indeed a late block !!

Yours has 4 bolt main's I see with the outer holes countersunk [?] Looks like a lot of work to aid drain back of oil via the lifter valley, I assume the tread connection is a for the dry sump pump ?

Great picture, if you have any similar, I personaly be fasinated to see them [8D] thanks for sharing with us
