200+ Improvements

Prompted by claims that there isnt much going on here at the moment... Here's one to while away these long winter evenings or to occupy you whilst marooned by flood water (UK).

Lets see if the collective knowledge of forum members can come up with the claimed "over 200 improvements" made when production shifted from Speke to Canly.

Some are obvious but others more subtle.

I wouldn't call them improvements but BL may have done. The map light was dropped whilst the car was still in production at Speke. I believe it was only fitted during the first part of 77 and then dropped.

Extra padding in the seats was one of the improvements. Another was sealing the light motors from dirt and water and another the hot air flap on the air box. Well that's three so only another 197 to go.

John, I'd rather have your mechanical expertise, far more usefull.

Back on topic. They claimed better anti-chip coatings to the sills and better rustproofing generally, though the passage of time has proved this was not the case. In fact some of the so called improvements that Canley claimed were implemented and started at Speke. The improved fuse box,door mounted lights and body coloured tail panel for starters. The five speed gearbox was made standard fitment from Canley and the revised header tank on the coolant system, doing away with the plastic one. How many is that ? I give up someone else have a go please.

Hi Roy,

You make me [:I] You dont end with cars like have without being good with a spanner.

With the relocation of the expansion bottle , the rad changed as did the thermostat housing.

Addition of hot air pick up onto exhaust manifold.

Not sure about this one, my Speke car has bullet connectors on the headlamp motors, my Canley car has moulded plastic connectors [?]

Bonnets hooks, did they change with factories or at Speke, spoke to a gent who worked at a bodyshop in the 70's last weekend, said he had seen some very nasty accidents involving early bonnet hooks not holding and bonnets entering the cabin, food for thought [xx(]

Well I don't have a Canley car so correct me if I'm wrong, knee pads welded all around rather than folded and glued, boot light, boot strut, dashboard colour, lighting bar.

A lot off the changes were structural that must wouldn't notice,the front crossmember, thicker metal in many areas,additional spot welds,doors and inner wheel wells brackets just name a few.

Bonnet hooks did change at Speke. By the time the car was built at Canley the three pin push connectors were standard fitment. One of my early 77 cars has both bullet and three pin connectors so I guess it was phased in gradually. The grey colour dash did appear at Canley but not until the Premium edition was launched in 1980. The first Canley cars still had the Black dash and still had the Red and Green check trim. The later Speke cars did have a boot light fitted so Canley can't claim that one either.
