Yes, it is normal. In fact, each of the side vents are separately controllable while the two center vents are controlled by the vent lever.

I tend to leave the center vents closed while using the side vents with the fan to direct air towards my glowing profile while meandering oer the hills and far away.

Thanks Mildred, good to know. It had been so long since my last TR7 that I had forgotten.
As for meandering, I believe that is built into the TR7/8s and I also think I might have read that in one of the manuals.
Stay safe.

You do realize that the vent in the center only brings in fresh air when the fan switch is turned on and set lower than maximum, like 3, 2 or 1. The vent lever open the internal flap that you can see through the center diverters, while the fan controls opens the flap to allow fresh air to enter. At Maximum, it recycles the interior air.

Good point Clay, most (all?) A/C cars have a recycle air position so the A/C is cooling precooled interior air for those blast furnace days or when car has been parked in the sun, only to be used until the interior has been cooled a bit (or cooling element can freeze up if efficient enough). On cars with graphics on controls it's a picture of car with arrows going around in the interior (like my Integra) or on letter marked controls named as Max (Maximum).

I seem to get warm air from the vents sometimes, certainly never cold. Its a standard UK spec car but I think the flap seals might be a bit past their best.
Are there any recommendations for renewing or repairing seals and flaps when rebuilding a heater? Sure I saw something about it somewhere.

You should check that the foam seals on the sides of the removable fresh air intake duct at the rear of the engine compartment are in good shape as well. Without these in place heated engine compartment air freely enters the cabin.

Most cars that I have seen do not even have the seals. I have made several sets so far for the fleet.

My seals had turned to dust so I replaced them when I had the heater/AC out. You can use similar type foam which you can get from auto upholstery shop or craft store.

Thanks for that Clay. I didn't know about the fan switch positions 3, 2 & 1 brings in fresh air. I'll have to check if the flap is also opening when turning on the fan.

Thanks, this prompted me to take a good look, and actually, I didn't have to go further than the engine shot in my signature. As you can see, for some reason the top foam seal is cut off and doesn't go around either side and that would certainly allow hot air to mix with any cold air that does make it through the screen.

All fixed but haven't checked it on the road yet (raining)..

Yes, my friends, but how about the disintegrated foam that used to be glued over the interior side of the vent itself. Without that foam, air leaks around the vent into the cabin and rattles against the frame. Mine rotted away about ten or fifteen years ago.

May I suggest an alternative solution to the foam insulation on your center vent plates? This may not cost you anything, if your lucky. You will need about a 6" by 12" sheet of packing material. This material is typically about 3/16" thick. Usually this can be found used as soft filler in packages or as the wrapper on various computer equipment. You will also need your tube of Super Glue and scissors.

Remove your two center vents as you need to clean the dust & grime off them anyway.

Image

Using your vacuum cleaner to remove the remains of the old foam, cut to fit the new packing material for the vent plates. Next, glue them onto the vent plates. As Super Glue dries very quickly, waste no time in fitting the sheets into place. As you can see in the photo, the new sheets are in place providing an air tight seal.

Total job cost, $0.00. All the components were found around the house.

Now, if the white styrofoam sheet is not your favorite color, try painting the sheets with your kids water based school paint, or a black magic marker. I leave the decor arrangements to you.

Fencible, unless you spend a fair bit of the time in your car stationary, I'm afraid those seals on the fresh air plenum won't do much for your cool.

Since we fitted the new engine air intake to the 8 we have not been able to fit the fresh air plenum. I expected this would give a lot of heat, & engine compartment smell into the cabin. The plan was for my son to make a new one.

Fortunately, living in the country, I don't often have to stop the car when driving it. The fresh air vents in the bonnet/hood must be very efficient, as even with no plenum, the air coming in is fresh & cool, definitely not engine compartment air, which in the 8 is very hot.

This has allowed my son, with a lot of fiberglass experience, to put off for over a year, making the promised new fresh air plenum, to fit the reduces space now available.

Hasbeen,

If you do not have room to slip the fresh air scoop past the air cleaner, you might try what Bill Derksen did. He cut his in half so he could slip them in from the sides and then installed a clip in the middle to hold the two side together.

That sounds interesting Jclay, I'll have a chat to the boy about it. He did a fiberglass boat building course a while back, & reckons he's got it all figured out. The only thing that worries me is that was about a year ago, & he's not started yet.
