TR7V8 wins Supaloc Targa Adelaide.

Postby nadg63 » 02 Sep 2012 07:45

A week ago the second running of 'Targa Adelaide' took place here in Adelaide, South Australia, but for the first time it was open to modern cars as well as classics, so the field ranged from a Hillman Imp to a couple of Lamborghini Gallardo's - with the usual Escorts, TR's, Evo's, GTR's etc inbetween. This time round I was navigating in a huge V8 Aussie 1969 Holden Monaro. There was also a Triumph Mk1 in the field:

The 'Modern' section of the rally was won by one of the Gallardo's, but the overall Classic section of the event was won by my ex-driver, Craig Haysman, in the TR7V8 he recently aquired from Ian Wilson, (of Triumph Rover Spares here in Adelaide), he now has our previous car, the 'red' one up for sale.

The yellow car was purpose built as a tarmac rally car by TRS from a bare shell, pictures of the build being on their website - it is a beast of a thing!

For you that imagine that Australia is the land of the sun, wrong! The event had everything weather wise, rain, (lots of!), gale force winds, hale, fog, low cloud, then sun on the final day. All in all it was atrocious, had better weather doing Targa Tasmania and that is reknowned for being horrible!

And this is the Monaro I was strapped in to, (BTW: I'm the St George flag part of the team [:)] ):

Thats what I call Motor Sport & you definately know how to do it down there.
Fantastic Photos & thanks for posting them.

Why bother with F1 round the streets of London when we could do this round London - over to Wales, Round the Scottish Borders, Yorkshire with a splash of the M1 to return. Add in NI where there are some great Tarmac Rally Roads & we'd be on.

Easy eh [8D]

Great news. The parts available from TRS are mouth watering. I wouldn't mind that front valance but can't see it on their website.

Noting the anti-role bar clamps are a lot further inboard that normal. Is there a benefit to this?

How was the Monaro? Did it have the benefit of modern brakes?

Hi Peter,

On the front valance, I'm not sure where Ian got it from, but I'm sure if you emailed him .......... ! (it may even be the same as the one Troy was using on his gravel car here in Aus which I believe he had moulds for!?)

On the anti-roll bar set-up, the car runs a tubular cradle type sub-frame rather than the original pressed steel type , again this was designed by TRS during the build so I am guessing that is why the clamps etc are located differently!? If Ian did it, there is an advantage there somewhere ....... !

As for the Monaro, it was a blast; 500+ bhp, rear wheel drive and old school, (no power steering etc). We went ok, finished 11th overall in Classic outright, and finished 5th in early Classic Handicap after running 3rd for most of the event [V] On the brakes front, yep, definately modern, had a full Willwood set-up at the front.

Somehow I keep getting rides in V8's, started in a '71 GTHO Falcon, then the TR7V8, the Monaro plus I did Targa Tasmania this year in a Ford Capri Perana - that was quick too! [:D]

PS:- As Beans pointed out elsewhere, the TR needs it's roof mounted air-intakes modded for when the weather is less than dry - check the pics to see why ................ [;)] [:)]

My Rallysprint youth revisited.

Yes, I like the wet weather mod on the roof vents too
