Rear End Rumble

Postby REPLIC8 » 26 Jul 2012 20:14

Out in the TR8 last night and on the way home noticed an intermitant rumbing/knocking noise from the rear end. Couldn't really isolate when it does it.
I've jacked up the rear to check things. There's very slight play in both cv joints on the propshaft, I'm assuming there would be some play or should there be none?
The offside wheel moves in & out about 1mm, but there's no play in the bearing when I rock the wheel top to bottom or side to side. If spin the wheel I can hear the bearings rumbling.
The nearside moves in & out about 3mm and has play when rocked top to bottom and side to side, it also makes a rumbling noise when the wheel is spun.
I'm assuming both rear bearings are knackered. I was hoping to take it to Peterborough next weekend (200 miles or so). Is this likely to cause more damage or would it be OK and replace them later in the year when I've got the time/money.

Be sure it's not a mashed up differential as that could bring you to a terminal halt from any speed.

I would cancel the trip and fix the car.[;)]

I don't believe you should hear any rumbling. Whether bearings or diff. I would be wary of taking a trip until noise rectified unless you are a member of Auto club and have a cell phone to call a flat bed plus might you be doing further damage? Don't know. I'm always up for adventure but maybe not that. Just my 2 cents.

Check your tyres.

The last time I heard a rumble from the back of a car was just before a rear tyre failed catastrophically. It did not just go flat, it shredded itself.

most likely a wheel (axle) bearing. had same problem on mine. replaced both, since I have the thing up on jack stands, but getting bearings off axle shaft likely will require a hefty press and/or heat. I theoretically could've run that noisy bearing a while, as it gets constant oil (provided differential's got oil in it). brake drum's gonna need persuasion in form of heat & percussion (aka hammer), it's a slightly- tapered shaft. don't forget new seals- cheap insurance to keep oil out of brake drum...[8D]

Had another look today, think it's either a wheel bearing or maybe the cv joint clonking on the prop. Don't think it's anything too drastic but I'll probably not risk the long trip just in case. Bit of a shame as it's been running really well this year and was looking forward to taking it to the show. Probably still go, just have to be a passenger again.
