When I lived in a cold climate, we used this to keep water out of the gas tank.

I use Isopropanol when I put the car away for the winter. A gew years ago it had a bad time waking up which turned out to be a large quantity of water in the tank, did not burn too well. I had to empty the tank and use some of this to absorb any remaining water. I now put 1/2 litre in when it goes away on October and have never had a problem since.

I initially tried to buy it in various chemists but they all look at you (or me) suspicously and think you want to drink it! Easy to buy on the internet and cheaper.

I think the Halfrauds type stuff is probably similar but in a fancy bottle at over 5x the cost.

Meths (methyl alcohol) does the job too. But I wouldn't add it unless I was going to burn up the tank contents pretty much straight away.

Various types of alcohol will work (if it has the contents on the label you can see which one). It will contain other things to try to justify the price but it's the alcohol that does it. If buying alcohol you have to be careful, you need pharmaceutical grade alcohol that is 99% pure or some such. Ordinary alcohol meant for other uses like rubbing alcohol may only be 60% alcohol and 40% water, not good.

If you are going to use meths, make sure it's new stuff, not something that has been hanging around for months. The old stuff will have been absorbing water from the air, & may be worse than rubbing alcohol.

A mate of mine had a beautiful stainless steel, gimballed 4 burner & oven stove on his yacht. He was wondering for some time why it would no longer bake scones in the oven.

It ultimately got to the stage that it took so long to boil water, he reckoned he could die of thirst waiting to make a cup of tea.

The thing had a 2 gallon meths tank built into it, which he had filled over a year before. Another mate took a sample of his meths, & had it analyzed by the university where he worked.

The answer came back that there was so much water absorbed into the meths while it sat in his stoves ventilated tank, they were surprised it actually burnt. Because of this it burnt so cool it was only just above boiling point of water.

That stuff would be adding water to your tank, not reducing it.

Thanks for the responses - all good stuff.
My 'beast' is a TR7V8 4.3 litre with 4 (yes 4) Delorto DHLA45 carbs fed by a 'twin' SU fuel pump mounted in the boot.
It has a jag type clear bowl press reg/filter which after about 20 miles half fills with water. I think water has got in thru' the fuel filler cap so I will have to address that.
I think I may be better draining the fuel tank but not sure about the best way to drain it. The fuel will not gravity drain out of the feed hose, tried using the SU pump to pump it out but that did no seem to work either. May have to bite the bullet and remove sender and get in that way but was hoping to avoid that. Trying to feed a small hose down in to the corner of the tank to siphon it out has been a real PITA.
So my questions was about using the Halfrauds fluid instead of hassle of draining.
