Broken Lock

Last fall, getting ready to go home from British car show at Fort Rodd Hill the locked glove box wouldn't open. I thought it was just jammed with stuff I had in there. This spring I took out the dash to correct fallen rubber strip on left and get at the glove box from the rear through the fuse access hole. Well you can't because the dash is screwed to the fuse box. While upside down, I could get a screwdriver in the bottom slot of the lid and move the stuff aside. That wasn't it. I then found if I pulled the lid forward I could see the white nylon latch. I was able to push it down with a right angle scribe tool (an allen wrench would work as well). Door open, I pulled the lock to find the end broken so it couldn't activate the latch. Now I'm pretty careful when locking and unlocking it but I do it fairly often. If it happens to you, you can still open it using above method. By knocking out the roll pin you can use your existing tumblers with a new barrel so your existing keys will work.

why do you lock your glove box ???

I personally never keep anything in there of value and never ever lock it (much to paranoid some dumb ass thief would shove a screwdriver or something in there just to see what's inside the locked door ...........)

You're a lucky man Spyder, I don't have anything that would fit in the glove box, that would be worth pinching, so mine has never been locked. Still I do like your repair style.

I had the boot/trunk lock fall half out the 7 a while back. The leaver catch portion stopped it falling out of the hole in the boot, fortunately.

I mucked around inside the reinforcing in the back of the boot, found the spring clip, that holds the lock in place, & put it back. I did it again a few days later, & again a week or so later, after bending the thing to try to make it stay in place. Still no good, out it came again.

After a week of trying to locate a new clip with out any joy, I had a thought. WHY NOT USE THE ONE ON MY SPARES CAR? You've got to admit I'm pretty a quick thinker with these things. Problem solved.

In my defence I claim that there is so little left on the spares car, that I haven't used it in years.

Like you Spyder, I do prefer repairing the old bits, rather than buying new bits.

Glove box is where I keep my insurance papers, garage door remote, pen, hat, things I need access to from drivers seat but not especially valuable. My car is in locked garage when home, when parked out it's in mall parking lock and not likely to be broken into in the community where I live. If I had it parked out on the street or public accessible parking garage that would be a different story as that's where car break ins around here occur. It just keeps out the kids and smash and dashers.

If I have to park it overnight in the big city (Vancouver) then it's everything in the trunk.

But since I've fitted alarm triggers for the glovebox lid, the luggage lid, the doors AND the bonnet
- meaning if anyone touches anything the alarm goes off and the immobiliser thoroughly kills the car
(it's actually a several minutes job for me to reset!). I thought it better to prevent my generally roofless
car being mugged or stolen without 'everything' being locked. <i>They</i> just brake things anyway to get
past locks... So now I can have my restaurant lunch/dinner without having to watch it <u>all</u> the time.
Now IT tells me when it's time to look out the diner window...
