Renewed enthusiasm

Postby manwithtool » 19 Apr 2012 07:24

Just thought I'd dribble on a bit about a few things. I have a 1980 TR7 V8 owned it for about 24 years now. Most of the restoration was done att his time. Now it's 20 years later and things are needing attention.

I had noticed fumes in the car more and more, so took the plunge and bought a Stainless system to replace the 24 yr old steel middle section. Made a huge difference. This made me think that I remembered the gearstick gaitor has been split from day one...so went to replace that, guess what..bushes completely gone on the remote linkage. Hopefully changing this and the gaitor will quietent the car down...and with a new aerial I can also finally listen to the radio.
Next on the list is to replac the hood. I had a Mohair hood fitted at the start, any advice ? been looking at Don hoods Mohair hood. £290...I'l have a crack at fitting myself unless anyone wants to put me off doing this.
Cheers

That's what we like to hear.

I had got to the stage of not using my 7 all summer. Our summer heat was too much for an old bloke in a non air conditioned car.

Now after fitting an air con system, I am having to force myself to drive the other cars, as my new enthusiasm for my cool 7 makes me want to use it all the time.

Hi,
I've a good old Panasonic radio with a 10 CD box and 2X75Watt + 2X150Watt speakers but the only sound I like is the rumble of the engine trough the S/S silencers.
Radio is only on when parked waiting for the misses when she is shopping.

Greetings, J.

Did you restore it at the beginning of the 24 year ownership or at the end?

The two remote shifters I've seen had missing shifter bushings, they were both California cars (hot, dry weather). Haven't checked Yellow TCT yet, local car (cool wet weather).

I've never seen a good installation write up on installing hoods including books on the subject with pictures. I think it's the kind of thing you just go ahead and do with what ever instructions you have available, use your head and do it when it's hot (for vinyl malleability).

I just bought a hood from Rimmers and I have to say I am very disappointed. The Mohair hood previously fitted was a much better quality and this was purchased from S&S (although I dont know where they get theirs from... any ideas?)

As far as fitting is concerned, this is not something I would undertake without someone being on hand who had done it before (£300 is too much money to practice on!!)

I got my mohair hood from S&S about 3 years ago, if I remember right it actuall came from Rimmers, but at a much better price. I fitted it my self, not a professional fit but not bad, the rear screen is not taught as it should be.

I was lucky in that when I bought my car (out of a barn) with a tatty PVC hood there was a new mohair hood in the boot. Although I did not pay for it, it looked a daunting task to fit. I searched for info but there is not much around. There was a very brief writeup on one of the websites but pretty much said the obvious. The best guide was removing the old one and Roger Williams 'How to Restore Triumph TR7 & 8'. I did it on my own over a weekend. Main thing is to make sure you have the right rivets for the header rail seal and rear rail press studs. Mark the centre line with chalk and work away from it. Also make sure that when gluing the cover to the header rail it is not latched in. The material needs to be fixed 15-20mm 'short' so that it stretches taut when latched. It is pretty tough to pull onto the latches at the beginning but mine is still pretty tight after 5 years. Most difficult bit is making tidy cuts/folds where the material goes around the ends of the header rail and glues under.

Cheers guys...
To be clear I bought this car back in 1987 after reading about the S&S TR8 conversion kit. I think I converted the car in Feb 1988 and ran around for about 2 years during which time I had the Mogair hood fitted and upgraded the diff to a 2.84 :1 unit and all the suspension uprated, then took it off the road for winter and had new front wings, front panel and full sills fitted. I then stripped it back to bare metal and resprayed it Red (was Gold). The following year I dropped the engine out and repsrayed under the bonnet and rebuilt the engine with fast cam and Real steel Stage 1 heads....It made no difference to performance at all !! However after a rolling road session it transformed into a 230 bhp (or so I was told) monster. Really haven't doen much to it since. Used it most summers apart from a 4 year gap when I had a 1985 El Camino.
There life story !

Hiya,

Everything I've read about DIY fitting hoods, PVC, Mohair or otherwise is don't do it. I don't think Mohair has any give in it all. At least PVC can be stretched a bit when warmed up.

I bought a made to order blue Tonneau cover from S&S many years ago but the dot fasteners came loose in a bag. The reason being that the factory didn't always fit the hood fasteners to the car in the same place.........Measure twice, make holes in the cover once and it all went together very well and still looks good.

I'd think twice about fitting a full hood though......Even when Grinnal fitted a new PVC hood on mine it wasn't quite 100%.
