Fender flares

I decided not to sand tonight, and fitted (actually, force fitted) my front arch extensions. Right away I didn't like how they fit at either end. So, as I'm already fiberglassing the rears, might as well mock up something to see how I might modify the fronts... What do you think?

this is why I make parts to order, and don't let them sit around in a box forever. I believe if the part isn't supported, as if it were in the mold, or on the car, it will become misshapen by sitting in a box,on a shelf somewhere.

Hi all,

Well it's been almost 3 weeks since the last update on my fender flares. Did a whirlwind combined business/pleasure trip virtually around the continent, then family and friends for Easter/Passover. And what with catching up at work, I just started working on the flares again yesterday.

I decided to make the plug on the drivers side differently than with the foam I used on the passenger side. So, I tore off the spray foam beginnings I left off with 3 weeks ago. I bought a sheet of 1" thick rigid insulating foam (the purple-ish molded stuff, not the white particle type) and started cutting an trimming pieces to fit. It was easy to do. This is what I came up with:

Took about two hours to mock up. No sanding no dust. Lesson learned. [:D] Measurements for the extension are virtually identical to the sanded down passenger side:

Tonight I put a layer of glass matt over it. Now I wait for it to set up in our cool Canadian spring evening.

Tomorrow I get all bundled up, with hat and mask; and plug in the sander and make more dust. [:(] Before the weekend is over I plan to have the plugs ready, waxed and the extensions molded over them. (Hope springs eternal [8D])

Looking pretty good there Martin. Mike Perkins has told me that mine are the narrow forest flares. I don't know for sure, they were on the car when I bought it. I do really like them though.

I feel compelled to say that Jims front arches are in my opinion, the finest looking arches I have ever seen, I would love to have something similar to them on mine. During the eighties there was a glut of so-called specialists offering all sorts of wild and wacky body kits for all sorts of cars, none of them ever came close to the quality of your car Jim.
Tastefully aggressive, nice.

100% Agreed ....the way they fit gives the car a perfectly aggressive stance without loosing the original lines of the wedge !

Thanks for the compliments guys. I have liked this car and its stance ever since I first saw it back in the mid '80s. When I bought it it had been sitting neglected for quite some time. The paint shop had a heck of a time digging out the front left flare and getting all of the rust and water that had collected there over the years. I may still have more trouble with it but so far so good. If the front flares blended with the air dam somehow maybe it would look better from the front. I just don't know how it could be done and look any better than it does. Sorry to hijack the thread.

Jim,

Do you have any higher res pics of the flares on your car. I think I like what they did up front, but would like to see additional pics.

Did a bit of grinding on the driver's side tonite and a coat of filler on both sides to level things out. More ginding tommorrow....

I would be loathed to risk ruining what you already have to be honest but i see your point,

Yeah, that was about the only thing I could think of. It might end up looking too heavy then though. All things considered I think I'll keep it the way it is.

Been 6 months since I started my fender flares project. Had to put most of the summer on hold due to burying several family members (it happens to us all, eventually) and then marrying off my daughter ($$$$!!). Thankfully that is all behind me now and I can start to focus back on the body and fender flares.

What with the intermittent way I've attacked the fiberglass work this summer, I am amazed I actually have a pair of custom rear fender flares almost ready to mount. Seems I forgot to take pictures of the messy part of the work. And boy, fiberglass isn't as easy as I expected it to be. Sharp bends and angles are a bit of pain to turn out good, when inside of a mold. I had lots of voids between the gel coat and the glass I laid up, in the first flare. The second one was better. And, I do have molds so I may get better if I decide to make a few more.

Today I did a trial fit of the drivers side flares. Turned out fairly good I think.

More to come over the weekend, now that I've got the urge to work on it back. [;)]

Got my car back from paint and now busy re-assembling and trying very hard not to put scratches into her!

Possibly have her done this weekend!

4.5yrs of semi steady work and the end is now in sight.
