Gearbox serial number

Postby TR Tony » 12 Apr 2012 18:50

Well I know this question has been done to death on here & other forums BUT I took a look at the box in my TR8 today while it was on the ramp for some minor maintenance and have a question[:)].

The serials number starts CN, then the actual number & ends with the suffix C. I understand the suffix C part but I have not come across a box with the prefix CN.

Anyone got any info on where this may have come from? I think early TR7 5 speed boxes were CL so maybe this is just a later TR7 box?

All 5-speed gearboxes I have are CL-******C(0).
They are all (5 of them) from cars ranging from early 1980 to late 1981.
Maybe a different number because it's a Tr8 with different spec gearbox?

That's a possibility Theo.

Any of you TR8 owners out there able to comment?

Had a quick look in one of my books and a "normal" factory TR8 should have 15A prefix gearbox.
So bearing in mind yours is a development car they maybe used parts lying around in the workshop?

[:D] That's also a distinct possibility!

TR8 gear boxes have CN prefixes, it's even on the bell housing in wax pencil. At least it is on my three TR8's gear boxes (one 1980 and two 1981's).

Thanks Peter. I also had a reply from the TR8 email list saying the same thing, so it would seem CN denotes an original TR8 gearbox.

Is there any actual difference in the internals of the box compared to a TR7 CL box?
