Modified Heater Matrix.

Hi,

Was having a chat up at Stoneleigh yesterday with Simon and Ben from Robsport. They now carry a modified heater matrix that gets rid of the seals that seal the feed and return pipes as they enter the matrix. As some may know these seals have not been available for some time and they do leak. Also the pipes that go in and out of the matrix leak, and when you replace them, personaly recomend the stainless steel ones, you idealy need new seal.

As i hope you can see the pipes are part of matrix and all you need to trim down the feed and return pipes, then use heater hose to join it all up.

I saw that too John, very useful modification!

Ian Tinsey, our local TR expert down south, told me last year about a different matrix he had used when rebuilding heater boxes that did not need the seals, could be the same part? IIRC he told me it was a Ford part.

I have managed to find 2 new seals but I wish I had seen this first (I saw it yesterday too) because I dont know the state of the heater core in my fixed head.

Indeed looks like the matrix for a normal (non A/C) heater.
Interesting though, I was looking at the same solution, even got a quote from a local firm for an alloy matrix.

Hi,

When you look at what Rimmers want for a standard part no price difference, IMHO you would be far better buying the modified type. Plus seen loads of matrix's block up with debris, can always tell they weight a ton and have no flow through them.

There is a company in Birmingham called Radtec http://radtec.co.uk/index.htm who did a similar modification for one of My TR7s in 1988. Good though to see Robsport still trying to improve the cars troublesome areas.

An answer still evades me/us
- do this solution fit a car with AC? Or, is there a similar final solution somewhere out there for the AC Wedges?

I'm with Odd here. Other than the seals/no seals thing, what is the difference between A/C and non A/C heater matrixes? Does anyone have picture of them side by side. I have both types in cars but don't see a situation were I will have them out at the same time unless my Spider leaks while I have Yellow TCT out during resto.

A/C matrix is wider and lower in comparison with the normal heater matrix.
Also the connectors are different and situated differently.

Or is there a way to adapt it? An engineering exercise. Hope I don't have to go there. Is it possible if the A/C heater marix fails it ciuld be recored like radiator?
