BMW to re-launch Triumph... Possibly

Take a look at the following article which I find particularly interesting as it was October last year I communicated my thoughts regarding Triumph to the most senior BMW Mini executive via email when communication suddenly ceased. Probably had no bearing on their thinking and just a coincidence but interesting nevertheless.

Interesting indeed. But for me, I hope they don't revive the name,
as it won't be a Triumph but a badge engineered marketing plot.

If it's just a Mini Convertable, what's the point. Rather have people ask me, "who mskes Triumph?"

Years ago there were rumors BMW was going to bring out a Triumph with someone in UK putting down a down payment with BMW Dealer/head office to get the first one imported into UK. Seeing as they sold MG to the Chinese, what are chances that are going to try again? With Mini's and Miatas going for over $40,000 and with Solstice canceled there is a market spot for low end sports car but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Then again post-war Triumphs were simply badge engineered Standards. If they do re-launch and actually get it right then it can only be a good thing.

But at least there was the connection with the "old" factory and work force.
Or to quote from one of the Triumph History books;

If they do lets just hope it does justice to the name, I am not convinced they will.

One thing for certain it wont have a V8 in it [V] [:(]

Even the 6 cylinder BMW petrol engines are getting rare, the new 328 and 528 are four cylinder twin turbo engine's!!

That looks like a re-badged Solstice/Sky/GT! It's just as well that didn't happen, Triumph does NOT need an American manufacturer reviving it.

wasnt triumph started by two germans any way..

a few years ago, proberley 2000 i took a cutting out of motorcycle news, its still on my notice board and it reads.

"BMW TO MAKE TRUIMPH? there could be a new range of triumphs on sale soon- cars built by BMW. the german gaint owns rover,which has the rights tothe triumph car brand. the company is thought to be impressed with the revival of the triumph motorcycle brand and is looking at cashing in. triumph motorcycles' bruno tagliaferri said:" it doesn't bother us at all.in fact the resurrection of the name on cars could be good for us"

at about the same time pre MARCH 2000 when BMW pulled out i recall seeing a episode of top gear when they were in a design studio and richard hamond was talking about a revival in british designs and there was work going on by a major manufacturer returning a old name to the market. during the filming in the design studio was a clay mock up of a sports car. one side of it rough clay and the other a smoothed out model of a car body. on the front you got a quick flash of half a badge reading...MPH...

nothing wrong with the Solstic/Sky platform...the ones we get here in the shop don't appear to be too problematic...the ecotec turbo GXP was quite the powerhouse when tuned.

I like the concept photoshop TR from the rear quarters, kinda less enjoy the TR5 styled front end

Triumph was indeed founded by a German - Siegfried Bettmann in the 1880s. His right hand man was a chap called Schultz, also a German. So there is no problem with a German firm reviving the name in my opinion though I think it is important for the heritage of Triumph that it is made in Britain. And that would have been the downside with a re-badged Z4 because it's not made here (and probably why it doesn's sell!). But to do something with the Mini platform would mean it would stand a chance of being built exactly where the last Triumph was made, at Cowley.

There are rumours here that local car manufacturer plant NedCar is negotiating with BMW about the production of the Mini.
So there might be production facilities available in Oxford/Cowley soon [}:)]
