Repainting mirrors

I've finally got a complete set of original mirrors and all mounting hardware, thanks to S&S! I'm getting all the old paint sanded off, down to the metal. I plan to paint them semi-gloss black, I'm assuming that's the original color. My question is, do I need to prime them first, or is there a one-step paint I can use. Just want to do it right. Should I look into getting them powder coated?

I painted mine with trim paint. It's self etching so doesn't need a primer. It's satin (semi gloss) like most black trim. It stands up well. I also painted my windshield lower trim piece, quarter window frames, with it as well (in 2006/7) Still looks like new. Powder coating would no doubt be better but more expensive. I think I used Pro Form brand.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not able to find where to purchase Pro Form paint, I'll have to check my local auto parts store.

I used SEM Euroblack , using the similar process as Spyder


Light scuff with a scotchbrite pad, wash down with some panel prep, and couple of coats of spraybomb.

Took mine back too bare metal, etched primered and then satin black spray.

Mine were done the same way as Johns
although my car is going into the body shop next month and whilst its there i might have all the black bits powder coated depending on cost....

I wouldn't recommend blasting and powder coating the mirrors, as it's
to fierce. I had some done and the mirror back was full of ripples.

I had mine powder coated as it was the cheapest and easiest option.
But indeed the blasting has to be done very carefully to avoid damage.

Thanks for all the tips! I've already gotten most of the parts sanded down to bare metal. Probably go with the self etching paint, I'll let you know how it goes.

I totally agree. I'm in the midst of a complete restoration from a stripped shell all the way back up to original, and I have a quart of the same SEM paint sitting in my paint cabinet waiting to paint all the trim with it. It is by far the easiest way to get a good match on for the OEM trim black.
