Java Green car - can u explain serial #

Postby Jolyon39 » 10 Feb 2012 05:28

Hi,

I was called by a mechanic who has been asked to fix a TR7 so I popped around to his workshop and found a very very sound bodied, 4 speed, Java Green TR7. Sunning, virtually NO rust, just the fuel filler panel and a small bubble on the door.

Being an NZ car it has no serial number plate as seen in the UK, Australia or the US. It only has the tiny strip of aluminium with a number riveted to a turret. I have no idea why New Zealand cars are like this but most I have seen, and cut up, are just like this.

The plate reads T062485CC which of course means nothing but is the serial number of the car as far as New Zealand is concerned.

Could this be TCC 062485? if so then there is no TCC mentioned in the web sites I look at so can anyone shed any light on it? (The rivet might be obscuring CG instead of CC but that will take further investigation.)

Any ideas?

The car is registered as a 1978 for what its worth.

Jolyon

Been discussed before, it's the body number.
Nothing to do with the VIN of the car.

I agree but new Zealand cars do not have any other numbers at all, that is the problem.

I am curious if any other country has this anomaly? is there another copy of the serial number anywhere else?

Canley and Solihull cars had the VIN stamped in the boot gutter of the RH rear wing ...

I'm surprised that they would leave the serial number off just NZ cars. A friend just drilled out his VIN plate on his Spitfire and bondo'd over the holes before he painted it. Never knew it was there. Forgot his reasoning for doing it.

No way. That's definitely Bordeaux Metallic.

Over here in Oz they will not except the riveted on alloy plate, which all Ozzie 7s have, for identification, of an unregistered car. Despite all the advice of all our helpful members, I have never been able to find any stamped numbers on a 7 when I bought it.

Even if you have full history details of the car, they reckon it is too easy to rebirth such a car, so give you a hard time.

However, after the 6 weeks it took to get clearance from the police, that the car was not stolen with my first 7, & owning a set of number stamps, all my other 7s have been so stamped. It is bad enough that the engine number is so hard to find, without giving the authorities more problems.

I have always stamped, sorry found, the number on the left front suspension tower, where it's hard for a bureaucrat to miss. Some of the ladies in this line of work are not too sharp. I once had a 1.5 ton duel cab ute registered as a station wagon, because it had 4 doors she said.

So Jolyon, don't worry about that number, if you look closely enough, hammer & punches in hand, I'm sure you'll find it.
