Abandoned TR7

Postby trekcarbonboy » 29 Jan 2012 01:02

I've been keeping an eye on this TR7 for a couple years. The house it is at is also abandoned. Today I stopped in at the neighbors house to see if they knew who owned the property and they said he was in prison. Apparently the county has been out to survey the property, possibly for sheriffs sale. So now I'm going to inquire at the sheriffs office. If I'm lucky they will be happy to have someone (ME) haul the car off the property. Fingers crossed.

I'd find out why he's in prison before taking his car .....[:(!] [B)]

You might want to change the colour of the car.[:D]

Make sure you get paper work from the sheriff or you might be arrested for driving a stolen car, you might end up being cell buddies with former owner.[:p]

finally, somewhat my area of expertise..property. I'm a 15 year realtor. just my 2c though, check with your local authorities.

if the real estate and all personal property is abandoned, AND there is still a mortgage and no one makes the payment...

eventually the bank will come in, rekey the house, assess the remaining personal property and put a notice on the doors/windows stating "NOTICE" blah, blah found abandoned, if not abandoned contact XXXX, otherwise remaining property maybe disposed of. watch for a sign or posting on the house.

if there is no mortgage and he went to jail, not sure how that would go. you can call your local county clerks office and ask about sheriffs sale, she will connect you and ask about the property address, if sloted for sale and when.

when I have happened along an abandoned vehicle on a property that a bank was in ownership and hired me as the realtor to put it up for sale, I've called the police, they come and tag it for 10 days (Indiana law) and if no one calls on it or gets it, then they get it and most likely take it to an impound then auction.

this being so much older car, maybe exempt from them doing that, and it may just go to the person/company that does the 'trash out' (personal property clean out). may depend if someone in the loop actually says it's a bonafide "vehicle" or it's "debris".

maybe difficult but maybe worth it.

Great info Amy, thanks. I did talk to a cop friend of mine and if I just give him the vin# he will do a title search for me. Once I find out who the owner is I can make him an offer. I think $100 will go a long way behind bars. [;)]
Looked like this may just be a parts car. The inner crevices of the engine bay where packed with wet leaves and I'm sure a bit rusted. We'll see what happens. Just a shot in the dark.

So I spoke with the sheriffs office and the real estate property in question was seized by the DA's office in 2009. 1256 marijuana plants were found on 2 of the owners properties, this being one. I spoke with the assistant DA and he is going to find out if the car was seized also and give me a call back. If the car was seized then I have to wait till the trial is over (been long enough already don't you think) and the car gets towed to the county lot where it will be auctioned. That should bode well for me unless I can't attend.
If the car hasn't been seized as part of the drug bust then I can contact the owner and make him an offer. I have a friend doing a title search for me to find out who the actual owner is, just in case it doesn't belong to the guy in question.
Also worth noting. When I stopped by this weekend to get the vin# I noticed that the right front fender was quite smashed in and I couldn't get the passengers door open either. It shouldn't be a car that draws much interest if it does go to auction. Car hasn't been registered or inspected since 1995. I think I'll go throw a cheap tarp over it this weekend.
Sorry but if I do get this car I will most likely strip it to the bare bones. I need new inner flitch panels, door hinge, driveshaft, etc...for my car. And you can never have too many spares!

The door not opening may be simple adjustment/lubrication of latch/anti burst latch (discussed here before). Right fender may be more problematic (read spit and polish for our UK friends). Depends on condition of the rest of car. That being said you never know what or when you are going to need a part if you have the storage room.

Interesting thread, not just for Craig to have the chance to get the abandoned car, but reading about the different legal process compared to the UK.

Hopefully you will get the car, one way or the other, Craig[:)]
