Stripes or not?

From the pictures posted stripes can be a really tricky choice. The black stripes on the white car above look good, same whites strips on blue car not so much. Black stripes on Ruddy's car really good, the "Canadian" stripes not so much. Victory stripes work but almost identical Jubilee not as well. It's tricky as the design of the TR7 is intense and can easily detracted by stripes and not so easily improved.

Why do most stripes ignore the swage? I suppose these stripes might not work as well without the body mods, but I like the idea of working with the swage instead of fighting it.

I think it is because the swage line is already prominent and no accentuation is needed. Also one of the reasons why stripes are so tricky say compared to the Camaro, Challenger, Javelin, Mustang of the sixties where you could just throw some stripes at it and they work. I don't think the Quaker State strips would work without the body work.

I agree that the swage complicates matters for striping. I suspect mostly they were trying to de-emphasize the swage. I never thought the swage was a bad thing.

Has anyone ever tried a stripe similar to Harris Mann's original sketch? I think it would work very well and visually "move" the swage line up so it is comparable to many modern vehicles (Fiesta etc).

I used to have a single black pin stripe on the swage on my car. It looked O.K, but didn't really emphasise the styling. I agree many stripes can look discordant because they deviate from the original lines of the car, some though look very good. If you look on the back of the TR7 TR8 Gold Portfolio (Brooklands Books Ltd., England) there is a gold TR7 / TR8 DHC on the back and the owner has clearly taken some trouble to fit a moulding following the swage line. This looks very smart and practical and suits the style of the car. Not for me though, as it is obviously non original and I'm keen on originality. supercass

With many of colours on our cars I rather like the way the sewage line throws a shadow that gives the impression of a shaded stripe.

One of my 7s came with a very thin stick on moulded bump stop strip, only about 1/2" wide, & 3/16 thick, running up the highest point of the sewage. This went well with the shadow, & was brilliant at saving paint chips on that vulnerable sewage.

Unfortunately I have never been able to find the same thing to replace it.

Regarding the bump strip along the swage line, that was something dealers here in the US often installed. Mine had it, and I didn't care for it at all (black on a silver car really stood out). I removed mine, but it was held on with pop rivets, so now I have a 3/8" strip of silver tape along there, which is fairly invisible.

Personally I prefer the looks without it .... but I guess it could offer a tad more protection against parking lot damages for those who park in tight areas ..
