...I forgot - I wanted an automatic too, but those can be tough to find and when coupled to a 90hp engine, not exactly the quickest machine on the road. I don't mind a manual transmission (I've driven them all my life) but an automatic would allow my wife to drive the car too.

A friend has an automatic DHC (one of two in BC). I followed him through a "Victory Lap" of Richmond trying to find the Triumph Barbecue after the Van Dusen car show (we took first and second in class). I was surprised at it's get up and go, expecting it to be sluggish, all I could do to keep up with him. Not the same as actually driving the car for accurate driving impressions but still.

I like the look of the FHC advertised below but sounds like it wants a full paint which in turn would be engine out to do the bay and the costs start to spiral.

I agree, looks like quite a bargain. Not sure what colour it's supposed to be, and I don't really want to get into stripping it all down. I know it's lazy but I'd rather get one that I can just get in and use. [:)]

I recently bought a very good condition early Canley UKspec FHC (TCG1040xx) in pageant blue. It has single bulge bonnet, ignition key and wipers on left side of steerign column, and cooling system brass header tank on right side of engine bay. Is this a rare combination?

soem more questions about this early Canley FHC car:
it has front spoiler (fibreglass I think), front fog lamps, two rear fog lamps and a passengers door mirror. I suspect these are non-standard fit, can someone confirm, as I'd liek to have car a close possible to original spec for show purposes...

It also has a pop-up glass sunroof, which is hinged at front and handle at back. I assume thsi was also a non-standrd or did factory ever fit sunroof of this discription...?

My sons 1979 FHC (registered 1980 on a W)is as close to standard as any, it doesnt have front fogs, it does have rear fogs, front spoiler, double bulge bonnet, right hand header tank and left hand ignition switch.
Not a rare combination, the factory never fitted pop out glass sunroofs.

Hi,

Was so happy this year to get my early FHC, IMHO they drive so much better than the DHC

Its great having the best of both worlds, a standard FHC and a slightly modified DHC

Auto next on the list [8D]

Cheers John

I had won on eBay a pre-production TR8 auto FHC. It would have been ideal as my wife could drive it to car shows and I could drive the Spider. I was going to drive it back from St. Louis (always ready for an adventure). Alas, it was not meant to be as the winning price didn't meet the minimum and he wasn't ready to go for that price.

My FHC is from Canley if you want to include TR8's in your numbers. But I believe all production TR8 FHC's would have been Canley built. The pre-production cars were Speke built.

I don't mind admitting that during my first 20 years of DHC ownership I didn't rate FHC cars.

In the last 12 months I have added 2 x Speke FHC cars (both non-sunroof) and completely converted - I actually now prefer the look of the FHC.

Probably slightly off topic, but FHC car values seem to be all over the place. eBay seems to throw up cheap examples whereas the normal trusted sites have varying prices from £1000 to £5000+

I have an original '76 Speke car with 64k miles, FSH, 4-speed, Java green, black interior, tax, MOT etc. but have no idea of the value.

How do we currently value them?

Practical Classics Magazines's Dec 2011 Price Guide of TR7 DHC & FHC actually dropped the expected Price to buy our cars.
They go by models for sale at Auction & Private advertised probably not actual price paid.

Price is always what someone is prepared to pay, so hard to say.

We all value our cars probably higher than they will sell for - I have spent the good end of £2000 on my car on the suspension, carbs, some paint etc but will not get that back on any price I sell it for - but will get my money back on it which I paid for it.

Maybe not at the moment.

I've always found magazine values have been low because they tend to only use auction values, but I suspect that the next 12/24 months may see a big difference in FHC prices.

I don't think TR7/8's will ever command high prices due to the relatively small number of people who want one. Any car will only sell for a figure the current market dictates. If you want a good investment or want to make money, don't buy a TR7. I've probably put about £3k into my TR8 in the 4 years I've had it, this is just to get it into a good roadworthy reliable car. I'll never see that money back if I sell it.
These are deffinately a car you have to own just because you want one. They're great cars but they're also a 1970's BL product. Would you pay £10K + for an Allegro or Princess? Not a chance.
The only saving grace is you can get a good insurace valuation to allow a decent repair should the worst happen. It doesn't mean your car will sell for that much ( mine's valued at £9K by the TRDC) but you would need that type of cash to replace/ rebuild it.
We have to be realistic, and in some ways it's a good thing bacause it means more of us can afford to be TR7/8 owners, a TR4/5 is well out of my league, but my TR8 is an affordable hobby for me. [:)]

Andy.

The most sense that's been said for a while. Well summarised. Couldn't agree more. They're cheap and unloved. Good news for us. I bought a Toyota MK1 MR2 earlier this year. Lovely little car and equally cheap, rusty (lol) and unloved. Let's hope the masses don't spot that either.
