Calling it a Southern Skies roof is a bit of a misnomer. The sunroof was available nationwide before the Southern Skies edition was put together,(The sunroof was announced in a May 1976 TSOA Nesletter that I believe has already been linked to.) though the sliding glass sunroof was integral to the Southern Skies edition, Coupes that were not Southern Skies editions also had the same sunrrof available to them. The decal package was really the only specific part of the Southern Skies edition truly unique to it I believe. The photos posted by Beans are of a real TR8. I know, it is mine.
I've spoken to a representative of the company that made the sunroof and they indicated that that particular sunroof was only made for two years. Mike Cook, who worked for Triumph for quite some time in the US indicated in an email exchange that those sunroofs were not actually installed at the dealerships, but they were actually installed at the Port of Entry in Jacksonville Florida.
I'm became the third owner of my TR8 in 2005, the second owner bought it in 1982. I tracked down the original owner and he told me that he was there the day that this TR8 came in on the transporter to the dealership in Denver. The sunroof and the luggage rack had already been installed. He had the dealership install the bumpgaurds down the sides.
