TR Register TRaction

Postby busheytrader » 23 Nov 2011 19:23

Interesting letter published on Page 5 on one Wedge owner's experience of TR Register membership back in the day, and how it might have had an effect on the numbers still on the road.

Full marks to the club for publishing it.

Adam

Hi Adam,

The letter titled ' Save A Seven Campaign ' [?] You would not have seen it pubilished 10 years ago for sure !

Fair amount of 7 stuff this issue with intresting interview with Mr Brian Culcheth and even a picture of the front of my car ( just !! ) on page 73, however the gent who wrote the article was on the TRDC with his TR6 stand next to my car [:p]

Cheers John

Sorry John, but as the ex-editor of TRaction, having edited the magazine for the last 19 years, you would have definitely have seen that letter published 10 years ago, even 19, that's for sure. I have always published all letters relating to all marques of TR, good or bad, with the TR7 being no exception and receiving no special editing or favours.
Kind regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

looking back ten years plus, The Register IMHO has come along way regarding TR7's a lot of us on here have experienced negativity from certain members of TR Reg and this no longer thankfully seams to be the case and possibly down to people like yourself. In fact i was on The Register stand up at The Retro Show up at Santa Pod where only cars on it were TR7's

The point i was making that letter can now be published without negative coments, i hope !! I guess next issue we will see! It was meant as no attack on the great job you done as editor as i said gents like you appear to help change peoples reaction to 'our' cars.

Even hoping to go down to Le Man with The Register in one of my 7's

Cheers John

Hi John,

With respect what you said was: <i>The letter titled ' Save A Seven Campaign ' You would not have seen it pubilished 10 years ago for sure !</i> As we now agree, indeed it would have been published.

In so far as attracting negativity from certain of the TR Register members, then shear size will dictate that some have preferences of certain models over others. It's just natural.

Let's be realistic, the TR7 was controversial when it was designed, when it was being built, sold and now when it is in the hands of TR enthusiasts, that's the nature of our great TR.

At club level it can only be up to us to protect the reputation of what was the biggest selling TR of all time, a fact that others are somewhat envious, but don't forget, it did sell to an entirely differnt part of the public throughout the 70's than the previous TRs had.

However, it is my experience that in the last 20 years of heading up the TR Registers magazine that TR7 owners are least likely to "promote their corner" as a sidescreen or Mitchelotti owner will do. In fact most all of the articles on TR7s in TRaction (and there were a lot) were either generated or managed and promoted by myself.

So, I guess here's a message to you all. Don't watch and whinge from the sidelines of the chat rooms and forums. Get out there and remind the non-TR7 enthusiasts amongst the club scene of what a great car Harris Manns creation was.

Stand your ground when you meet a TR6 owner moaning about the TR7 pedigree and above all flood TRaction with letters supporting positively (please do not bother mentioning inter club politics it's not what 7000 readers are interested in) the great TR7 experience. Don't let's wait for a <i>"lack of negative comments",</i> let's be proactive and reply with a flood of positive commenting letters regarding the TR7 in the 2012 club scene. Above all let's be willing to make the effort to show the rest that the TR7 has a following of loyal, and enthusiastic owners willing to openly promote this particular TR.

Kind regards to you all
Steve

I've started and continue a "car of the month" at each meeting for the past 8 years where I give clues and members guess what car I have picked with results in meetings minutes. I've been told it is the high lite of the meeting for many and have been presented with a gift at year end banquet a number of years back. Although it is a different car/manufacturer every month I have done a few repeats on TR7/8's once being told "you like to make known their racing history, don't you?" In a muti marque club we've gone from zero TR7/8's to about ten (out of 102 membership). I've been told a number of times "I never liked TR7's but your's doesn't look too bad". Whether it's my not having any problems on our 5,000 km club trip to California or me blowing past a line of 22 cars up a long steep Malahat hill (they were going too slow, read speed limit, to keep up the RPM I needed to keep it in 5th). The tide is definitely turning, at least locally.

Having owned my 7 since new, I've had plenty of experience with the "remarks" of the Luddites. But at this late date it seems the negatives come only from those who have never actually driven or even had a ride in a wedge. Next time you hear from one of them, take them for a ride. Give the gift of paradigm shift!

We have been doing this Steve for 30 years, the problem for the TR-register it's been within the TR Drivers club. Now that is no slight on The TR-register, just a fact.

Time for closer links in the future? Why not? More TR7/8s together for me is what I want, not everyone may agree? That's for others to debate.

As I get older I am less cynical. I just want what is best for what happens to be my favorite car. Not the best car in the world I know (is any TR), but that is what being a fan of a particular car is all about.

Hi John,
Yes you are correct; I am no longer the Editor of TRaction. After 19 years, 144 issues, 66,000 pages and 20,000 hours I have decided that it is time that a new volunteer takes the reigns. I am confident there are plenty that will welcome the opportunity for change and have the necessary vision to take the TR Register magazine forward in a manner the membership deserves.
Kind regards
Steve
