Rear axle end play

Hi everyone!
I've been away from my TR7 and this forum for awhile (personal problems and what not), but things seem to be getting back on track and I started up my car a few weeks ago. It fired up, ran rough (old gas) but the brake cylinders in the back had leaked and drained all of the brake fluid. No rear brakes meant no test drive.
I changed the cylinders and brakes and noticed that the driver's side rear axle has about .25" of endplay. It slides in and out with a solid 'thunk'. No evidence of any real leakage and no radial movement - just in and out.
Before I start taking stuff apart, any ideas what to look for?

Have you pulled the brake drums off both side to see if the axle bearing keepers are bolted to specs? You would also note past leakage of rear end fluid here if they were lose.

Hi,
Yes, I put on new brakes and cylinders on both sides. I believe the brakes were the original ones (the car only has about 45xxx miles). Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I'm not sure what you mean by the bearing keepers...

My car is exactly the same, I can pull the rear wheels in & out a fraction. This is free play in the bearings. As long as there's no rocking movement they should be fine. I bought some new bearings to check & I could feel the same amount of slack in them between the inner & outer casings so I sent them back. It's just the way they are. [:)]

I don't mean to beat this to death, but having that much in/out movement doesn't seem to be a good thing, especially when it's only on one side. Do the rear ends in these cars (1976 with a 4 speed) have C clips or pins that hold the axles in or how are the axles held in place?

Based on the Problems people who have Caterhan Sevens fitted with a minor variant of this Rear Axle design . It's the axle bearings that have come addrift and the axle is sliding about. Soon to exit the car??
Only fitting of bespoke shims to eliminate the play and realign/retain the bearing is any kind of a permanent fix. G'luck.

Are talking of 4 or 5 speed axles [?] There tends to be very slight play on 5 speed axles as tapered bearings fitted on the half shafts.Never read anywhere a exact figure having said that.

Be intrested in what is being siad about this, is it on a forum somewhere ?

No C clip the axle is held(sort of)in place by a plate with four bolts and nuts. On the 4 speed axle their is one captive nut (per side)holding the hub onto the axle shaft with a woodrift key and cotter pin check to see if that nut is secure or tighten to spec.

The axle shaft on the 4 speed/ early auto cars is a two piece design where as on the 5 speed it's a one piece machinced design.
