Bert Smeets selling all his TR7V8 rally/race cars

According to a Facebook update from Bert, he is selling 2 ex-works TR7V8 rally cars and the Le Mans TR7.

I can only dream...

Hi,

Such a shame, Bert is a true gent and a very talented driver, not to mention a true TR7 enthusiast.

I hope the cars go on to someone who will use them, hopefully in the Uk and hide them away in a private collection. I know he has been blessed with another child recently too. Sure I read a little while ago he was considering selling up looks like this is the case.

Was lucky enough to help out on THE Le Mans car, with our Mr Turner and enjoyed every second of it [8D]

Is something going on... Well if you think about it I'm sure Burt was aware of the G44 car being up for sale and when you look at the price asked of it, it would make perfect sense to take the opportunity to put up his own at the same time. If someone is interested in one with history and have managed to find it, then they will no doubt find the other. In terms of how it will affect our cars... if they managed to generate enough buzz then the value of our cars in genereal could (i'll stress here, could benifit. We are a small market so two cars even though not much is a significant amount up for sale) The important thing here is that they are two cars with significant history which is what will warrent attention fom potential leads. if they sold for high dollar amounts then it could generate interest in the maket about potential. This is all speculation of course. Does it make a difference... Maybe to some who have voiced thoughts of why the value of our cars has remained low. This could be a bit of a kick in the pants to get things started with some cars that have history and creat a buzz.

Does it matter to me, not realy. I kind of like that our cars have remained so inexpensive to own. I get comments all the time as to how nice it must be to have enough money to have a classic sports car. I have nothing to hide and am honest with people about the value of my car and they are often surprised that they too could afford one!!

If you realy think about it would you want a car that is so expensive and obscure that no one even made any parts for it and there was no real support through forums such as our own.

OR.

Would you rather a car that has reasonable value, lots of different people can afford and has good support.

I hope they do well with the sale of each and if we are lucky it will draw attention to our cars but not to much.

I've always learned in life that everything is for sale. Not all the time maybe, but anything that has an intrinsic value can be bought at a point in time. We are only custodians.

It is a good time to sell a vehicle with pedigree at the moment. Investors need to invest and speculate at all times. With markets and property not making the gains of 4-5 years ago people will turn to paintings, chattels, vehicles etc. Good vehicles are definitely gaining. Piston heads are advertising a Ford Sierra RS500 for £43000 and i think it will sell.

Might be a good way to keep the tax office from my savings account [:D]

Beans, its JJO 931W, the last TR7V8 driven by Toy Pond when he won the Rallysprint.I always wanted to buy it, I think it will go abroad because of the weak pound.

Money matters to all of us to some degree but I think with Bert it's not just about the money and profit was never the motive. I doubt any sane person would expect the Leman car to repay the money sunk into it! Lets have a little sympathy for a guy losing his TR's!

I don't know Bert very well but well enough to bet that he will do his best to sell them to someone that is going to use them rather than to speculators/collectors/museums etc. It's a small world these days so wherever they go we can still enjoy them, if they're used!
