just watched a repro rally car finish on ebay.. quoting 4-6 mpg....
my 4.6 is bad on fuel, never done the maths myself.. proberly to scared. but was wondering what any other 4.6,s were getting?

It has more to do with the way rally cars are driven than the 4.6
In the recent WRC round we based our fuel requirements on 2 km per litre in competitive stages and 4 km per litre in transport or liason stages.My mate with his 2.1 litre nissan engine used the same calculation. He uses a 5.1:1 dif and 14" tyres we use 4.1:1 diff and 15" tyres.
These figures worked out to be pretty close. For the rally we did 240km competitive and 500km transport and used 287 litres in 3 days.
Plus what the service ute used. Our car is only 3.5 litres and 8.13:1 compretion ratio and 160 HP at the wheels. I do have a new engine on a stand that we are building which is considerably larger capacity and 10:1 compression. Woody from the Wedge shop is estimating somewhere in the mid 300 HP range.[:D]

Trickyx, when my 4.6L TR8 was putting out somewhat less than the 280BHP it had produced on the dyno, it could use up to 24L/100Km when really thrashed. On a Sydney Brisbane run, on one stretch it used only 12.9L/100 for a tank full. It had an overheating problem in heavy traffic, on 30-C days.

Since then it has had some performance modifications, & is producing over 320BHP. After the modifications, but before propper tuning, just some mucking with the laptop, I did 2,900Km, Brisbane to Wollongong & back with about 30% city running. My overall consumption was 10.1L/100Km. The overheating was so much reduced I could use the air conditioning in city traffic on a 27-C day.

From a different angle, I have raced a number of cars around Bathurst including F1 V8 Brabham Repco, F11 Brabham Ford [1100cc], FJ Lotus 20 Ford 1100cc, Morgan +4 2.0L, Holden Monaro, Ford GT HO, & even a Hillman Imp, among others.

They all but the Imp gave 7 miles/gallon

[:D] Obviously we were better drivers that that rally mob. [}:)]

I know this sounds ridiculous, but that's what they used. If you would like to cover the expenses, I'd happily run the 4.6L V8 in a race there, to find out how it compares for you. [:D]

We only count the front wheel km not the rear wheel distance covered. I have seen a 100% difference in wet rallies.[8D]

Hi,

As my learned friends say, depends how its driven. If i thrash mine around then single figures are very possible but on the motorway at a steady 70 then almost reasonable, 2.84:1 diff ratio helps alot with that figure. The rally replica you were watching has a 3.90:1, with the torque a 4.6 gives you IMHO way to low.

Our rally car with twin 45 Webers as per the factory 79 spec does about 6 mpg, on a run about 11, then your worrying about the short life of the tyres. Was hoping to get a bank loan to drive it to the NEC.

i know its down to how big your right foot is or how many smiles per mile your doing!!! so wots the best? so i worked out 22 mpg on a run down under... to 11 mpg when trashed.
