If you connect to the switch in the door post this is just the earth (ground) for the door lights. I assume that to come on with the door lights you would need to pick up the feed to the them around where it runs through the door post under the dash and use a connection from that to the LED strip, then wire the earth from the strip back to the door post switch line for it to go to ground when the door was open. I am away atm so don't have a wiring diagram to hand.

I think Alan is about right here on the wiring. IIRC there is a live to the door lamp, (purple wire?), there is a black earth & a purple/white to the A post switch.

The A post switch acts as an earth to complete the circuit when the lamp is in the correct rocker position & the door is opened.

The black earth is the one that gives you a circuit when the door is shut & the lamp is placed in the "on" position.

So, to get your LED to light up, I guess you need to provide a live from the loom, & connect your earth to the purple/white wire going to the A post switch, so that when the door is opened it makes the circuit.

Thanks for the tips, that's exactly what it was! It's still a little confusing to me, it's just a strange collection of hots and grounds, but it works and I'm not going to question it. And of course during this process I've found more varmit-chewed wires...ugh.

Not entirely related but I added a switch on the TR7 next to the fog light switch that turns on both door lights without the need to press the light or open the door.

On another I installed a MGF rear view mirror that includes an interior down light to illuminate the interior.
