Failed the MOT today

But not too worried.

Headlamp aim.

N/s headlamp loose - checked and they both are, the ring is tight but not clamping the lamps, didn't notice this before but some adhesive foam strip should sort this.

Emissions of course, no surprise, back off a couple of flats, maybe new plugs and airfilter as these have about 14000 miles on them.

N/s brake hose deteriorating - well these have been on the car for who knows, I will replace with standard for now as the brake upgrade is scheduled for next year. Should be able to get one from the local motor factor.


I am only a little disappointed because I hadn't given the car a full check over and its nothing major.

The car has covered a few hundred miles under 10000 since the last MOT, spent 3 months laid up over winter and has been reliable.

The only real problems apart from the high spped vibration has been the clutch master cylinder (not surprising as it contained some thick black liquid), front wheel bearing and recently the fuel gauge.

The car has not broken down (like it did we I got her) and given good fuel consumption.

Not to bad though Pete,

It could have been a lot worse, it was the emmissions that were the main problem when I had mine last year, they were a real swine to get through.

After a lot of playing around i finally got them to pass but the car ran like a bag of bolts, so as soon as it came out the garage with a pass certificate i turned the mixture straight back up.[:D]

soon as i get the sodding wipers working mines going back in, totally rebuilt the carbs on mine as emissions were through the roof, not had chance to get it back in yet to check if it worked, finished work tonight at 8pm and was already getting dark.....where has the summer gone!!!!!!!!!!![:0]

Thanks everyone,

Got the air filter and brake hose from the local factors around the corner from work and spent about an hour on the car tonight.

Fiited the air filter.
Padded the headlamps so they are now secure and adjusted the o/s lamp to a better position.
The second replacement fuel gauge arrived today so I fitted that and it works fine, took less than 10 minutes.

Saturday I will tweek the mixture using my gas analyser and fit the brake hose.

The car is booked in for a partial retest on Monday.

good luck pete, still finishing work at 8pm, staff not turning up so looks like i'm on extended shift tomorrow and in saturday but hope to pop mine up the mot station monday too....

All easy fixes there - well done. My car just sailed through it's MOT - I adjusted the date a couple of years ago so it's done at the end of summer and I can put the car away for winter knowing it's all set for next summer. My emissions are always an easy pass - CO 0.377 (4.5 allowed) and HC 715 (1200 allowed). And the car runs fine at these settings - I don't change anything for the MOT.

Today I replaced the brake hose and spark plugs. This turned out to be straight forward with no problems. Bleeding the brakes was hampered by my helper pressing the clutch pedal, I had made sure he knew it was the brake this time as he pressed the brake pedal when we were bleeding the clutch last year [:(!].

The old plugs were a good colour so I only backed off the mixture a couple of flats. It failed at 5.1% co which is only slightly over the limit. I think I have left my gas analyser in Somerset where the Spitfire is stored so I had to guess but this should be fine.

I found some marks on the back wall of the car port I had forgotten about, I made these for the Aligning the Spitfire headlamps when I fitted halogen lamps years ago so I used these to align the headlamps.

It should now pass the mot although I have instructed them to adjust things if necessary.

Pete I would have thought you would be winding the main jet up a couple of flats, to make the mixture weaker, not back them off, or is that what you did, & we are speaking the same language, just a different brand.

bmc, I hope that was a CO of 3.77, at 0.377 it is far too lean and will burn the valves/pistons.

Got my new MOT certificate today.

They weren't happy with the o/s headlamp pattern and replaced the bulb, I had noticed it was different to the n/s but didn't know this was a problem, I would have thought they could have noticed when they failed the car earlier, I could have fixed it over the weekend [:(!].

The emissions were still a bit too high, they reduced it back to 1.8% so looks like I may turn it up again. There was a remark about a split breather hose and this maybe having a negative effect, I was aware there is some oil around one of the hoses so will fix this.

Anyway at least its ok for another 12 months plus I am planning to use this weekend for a couple of days in Oxford.
