Making a car fit for the roads in Australia

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 10 Jun 2011 04:57

I have just imported my car over to Australia and I had her delivered yesterday. She now sits in the garage waiting for the battery to be charged and to be started after 4 months. I was wondering what I would need to do to make her fir for the roads in Australia. She had a MOT in the UK and passed it all OK. However, the things I was thinking about was changing the speedo from miles to K's and little things like that. Does anyone know what else I would need to do?

There are some standards which are national, and others that are state based. Some information for victoria is at http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Reg ... ration.htm

What part of Sydney are you in Phil?
There is aguy in Warick farm area that is involved with rallying. I think he is ablue slip inspector. He and his brother have a TR7V8 rally car. Ben should be able to help. Also in NSW we have historic rego. Limited use but only $50 a year. If you want send me an email and i will b pass on his details.[:D]

Road worthy certificate & a full tank of fuel. If you passed a MOT, you should pass the RWC. I think cobber use to work for the roads authority in NSW? If so he would be your go-to man.
Welcome to Aus and best of luck.[:D]

You are so lucky if a car that gets MOT will also get registered for road use in Australia. Rock on Australia.

Here in NZ they expect the car to have zero accident damage, zero rust and zero welding. Anything found must be repaired under the supervision of an engineer..... Most British TR7's that arrive here get scrapped.

A couple of easy modifications will see ya right:

Fit some sturdy "Roo" bars on the front of the vehicle. Make sure they extend well below the bumper to also scoop up the odd croc.

Take the boot lid (translation: trunk lid) off thus converting the car into the traditional Ute (translation: pickup).

A sun visor to keep the rays off the windscreen is another popular mod as are rain shields for the drivers door window.

Finally, stick a big decal with the word "pursuit" on the rear panel.

Don't all cars sold in Britain have both miles and kilometers on the speedo

In addition to Peters comments;

Better practice leaping ot the drivers window and away from teh car...... because that snake you just ran over might be wrapped around the suspension and be really upset with you. (I have seen it happen after the driver ran over a Tiger Snake)

Nah Muzz I was a Vicroads licensed vehicle tester here in Vic.
I let it go as it's was more trouble than it was worth.
However your MOT won't count for much other than as it's more of a comprehensive test that is done here in Oz so you shouldn't fail on things that are common to both tests, if the MOT was done properly.
Having said that like all testing the rules are open to the interpretation of the tester, so something one bloke might pass could be failed by another.
Now you might need to replace the tyres, even though they may have plenty of miles left in 'em. I seem to remember there being some silly regulation applying to imported cars to this effect. You may have to ensure it's up to the emission specs for it's year of manufacture (borrow some zs carbs, airpump etc if this is a problem. see if you can find some local 1st, if you cant, I can probably lend you some to get trough inspection)It all depends on how "friendly" and/or knowledgeable the tester is.
I'll send you my phone #, call me if you need help

I've got the roobar n sunvisor on my Fairlane, but it's still got the bootlid and it doesn't have the rain shield or the pursuit/ interceptor sticker!

And yes the roobar does have a cow catcher extending below the bumper!
Infact the only one of my vehicles that doesn't have a roobar is my TR!

Hi guys, thanks for that it gives me something to think about and work towards. Like the idea of the rego. I have now got her started and when I have done a few things, I think she will be ready to go on the road.

One of the hardest things I can see is going to be getting bits in and sourcing new suppliers. Back in the UK, I known where all the places were, but here it is going to be starting from fresh.
