S&S cut down and put a new thread on my 7's gearstick when I collected the S&S conversion kit from Ramsbottom.
Obviously the long throw of the standard gearchange becomes shorter but it makes the changes feel more direct and snappier. It looks better for it too.
However, if you think the change from 1st to 2nd is awkward when the gearbox is cold, it's magnified with a shorter stick. You just have to be even more patient. It's difficult to find the gears normally when the remote housing bushes start to fall apart. 1st was almost impossible to select with duff bushes, but after fitting polybushes to the housing all the changes became very slick again.
