Smells like a TR7

Postby Steve-LPS-Thomas » 10 Apr 2011 22:04

Just popped outside to get something from the car. (left out in the cool night air for a change!) After 2 operations on my nose and numerous courses of various (prescribed) drugs I certainly don't take my sense of smell for granted...

The car smelt wonderful.. all petrol, oil and old TR7. This is WAC I'm talking about so no old carpets, no mouldy trim, no old headlining but still totally TR7(8).

I came back in and put the forum on and read the post from bobbieslandy where he mentioned the way his car smelt when he went to move it and how he had get back in it and drive.

Got me thinking.. The TR7/8 is a relatively unloved car except by a select few.. what makes these people (us) like what others dislike and is it partially linked to nostagia which I would say is definitely linked to smell. I definitely felt cheated on the many occassions when I could not smell my car!

Vicky ('76 TR7) definitely has a different smell with all her 30 year old furnishing present (leaky windscreen, rodent nest found under passenger seat and seat foam partially eaten!) There is still the occassional acorn shell falling out of the heater.. along with foam dust when the blower is on.

That got me thinking even more.. does a FHC smell different to a DHC (with hood up) Come to that does a Speke car smell different from a Canley or Solihull car or even a Grinnall? And if blindfolded, could anyone recognise the different models or even their own car??

Blindfolds at Billing anyone?

Steve

Now that sounds like a challenge! The smell my car makes, not the exhaust fumes! it chills me out and puts a smile on my face for some reason. I can't explain it. Almost sounds illegal doesn't it[:D]

so true!!

My seven does have different smell than the rest of my fleet, kind of a gas/oil scent that is unique to the car.......though I really do mis the burnt rubber smell my 5.0 Mustangs used to develop come sprng....

I love the smell of Waxoyl in the morning...........[:)]

and with all the Waxoyl that's been pumped into it and under it through the years, the warmer days always smell of it.

I don't smell any oil or gas from the car. But when driving, I do smell the sweet smell of the fresh mowed hay, the pungent smell of the pig farm I just passed by, the smell of the sea (really the kelps washed up on the beach), the smell of diesel of the big logging trucks as I pass by. All the smells of top down driving, the smells my wife calls "stink" as she prefers the air conditioned, hepa filtered air of a modern car.[:p]

My TR7 has a smell, a good smell, not petrol or old oil. I like to think it smells like it did when it was new. Maybe its the newish carpet, or the new rubbers on the driver seat.

Great topic! I dragged my crippled butt out to the garage this weekend to start mine up as she has sat covered in the garage all winter the second I got in, there was that smell. Even with the entire interior re-done, I could close my eyes and it takes me back to being 18 years old in my '76 Victory Edition. Exact same smell.

Its that musty, plastic, with a hint of fuel smell and I think it is awesome!!

Definitely noticed this sort of thing on my 7...I think it has to do with the plastics/vinyl/fabrics/carpet used 30 years ago vs. modern materials. Totally agree with pupinabox, even when just going out to work on my 75,I liked the feeling I got from the smell while sitting in it. And Croydebay, the carpets in my 75 FHC are much thicker and nicer than my 80 DHC for some reason, though everything else seems to be the same,so I wonder if that accounts for the difference in smell (and there definitely is one!)

Today I smelt freshly mown grass, scent from the rapeseed flowers in the fields, and diesel fumes. Yes the hood was down (4th day in a row).
