ok folks, the hardtop is on, i may of mentioned this in passing in another thread, or two, or three.... so now i have decided to build a removable back shelf bit to add some storage and somewhere to mount some speakers, had a set of 6x9's floating around but they just wont fit anywhere, i hate door speakers, keep kicking them, so far this is what i'm going with, will be black carpet over it when finished and once a hole is cut for the speakers they will be covered in black mesh/material/whatever i can find to hide the speakers, unless they come with nice black mesh fronts....

Might pay to invert the front section of your enclosure so the seatbelt follows a more natural route without restriction.

hey come on guys this was a first fix....lol only need to chop a little off the seatbelt hole, they are raised up on the dhc anyways..... material links much appreciated and kel may take you up on the speakers...... [:D]

Why did you leave the space in the middle of the speakers

you would have been much better if you had made it one box

with two 2" air holes at each end, that way you would have got far superior bass sound

look a a sub box to see

if you look you will see the speaker with the air outlet

this will let the bass use the full area then uses the air outlet to flex the drivers in the speakers

hole in the middle for storage steve, will be mounting a door/flappy thing there, just not fitted, pics show basic layout, not fitted any of it in yet as still needs trimming etc, ie seat belt holes etc.... just going for say a pair of 5 inch round speakers each side of the belts so they sit behind the headrests, all input welcome as got spare mdf and just trying some things out,[:D]

Not bad for a first fix lol!! Better to have 2 separate enclosures for stereo speakers but the bass reflex port (2" hole) is a good idea.

I used to sell tools and other things on ebay and one of the things i sold was tri-axial 6.5" speakers. They give a very good sound with plenty of bass and are relatively cheap. I've hidden them in the original 7.5" speaker holes in the rear shelf of my Rover but they come with quite nice grilles too. A pair of these might be an option? If so let me know and i'll post some more info on them as i can still get hold of them and tools.

If you're using the centre area for storage, make sure the hinge can't rattle as it will drive you insane if it does - nice crisp music coming through the speakers and all you hear is the rattley hinge! Same goes for the door/flappy thing!

Going back to the bass reflex port, you already have it in the hole the seat belt exits from although it's not conventionally sized!
Looking forward to seeing the finished article here, definitely a good idea!

plasterboard? kel that house extension getting to you lol, no decided to use mdf........ worked on bonnet and boot down in the yard this morn and now just too hot to do anything, the heat does me no good at the minute,.....but would like to see them both done by the following weekend fingers crossed...... just need more paint now. wont be anywhere near perfect but at least wont be scared to park it in a car park.......

Shelf is too high and bulky for me, like having a rear engined car. I would have gone for self enclosed speakers. But even then are you not going to ever have a soft top on there? Seems to defeat the purpose of having a DHC not to be able drive it with out top down. If you leave the hard top at home you are at the mercy of showers. Not a problem in California, Arizona or Alice springs but elsewhere? Just wondering.

if tops off and it rains i get wet, plenty of holes in the florr for the water to run out.

my car isnt garaged so need to have a hardtop to try to keep it dry inside as no matter what are said about them i have never known a softtop to keep a car 100% dry, would love a softtop too but expense etc means will go with a tonneau cover when no hardtop, and car parked, but still playing with the idea of a split hardtop to make storage possible, lack of free time stalling that at the moment, as for shelf being too high, it stands out now uncovered but when black will not be so prominent and is no higher than the softtop when down would be, in fact with a little modification i think the softtop cover will still clip in place over it.
its all experimental and detatchable so soft top motoring is only the cost of a new hood and four bolts away anyway.....

if garaged and pampered and plenty of spare cash would be more original, mines outdors to be an every day car and i'm broke so has to compromise....[:D]

no still a convertible but as mentioned wayne mine languishes outside 365 days a year so need to protect the interior, am sisk of getting in a wet/mouldy car while working on it.

just want some speakers to play my fave 8 tracks on..... ok only kidding, cds, not after a big sub, or anything, will leave that to the boy racers.........

Hey Nervous,if it helps,I replaced my door speakers with ones slightly bigger,mounted with grills,in the stock location,and bought two 8" individual sub boxes from Wal-mart ($20),2 8" subs off of eBay ($30),and a 200w amp my mom gave me (free[:D]). I mounted the sub boxes in the trunk,using small metal shelf bracing (looks like a rectangular metal strip with a hole at either end),bent into a "[" shape,and anchored by the screws on the rear side markers (will take pics and show you,as it does sound a bit odd,I admit!) I still have a useable amount of room in the trunk,and because you don't really need a direct line of sight/sound for the subs as they are the lower frequency,they really fill out the sounds the door speakers make. People can't believe I don't have a huge box or something in the trunk,considering how loud it is,yet it doesn't make that awful buzzing trunk rattle you hear on cars with the box turned up too high.
