Has anyone with a convertible replaced the two centre vents in the dash with gauges? I'd be interested to see what the panel you made up looked like as I'm considering this myself....

With a V8 under the bonnet and no aircon I reckon I need the extra airflow from those vents on a hot day, even if it is warm air....

I've seen one 7 with cut down vents (widthways) and a couple of small gauges but it looked a bit odd.

Just a suggestion here, why not remove the speaker grille from on top of the dash and build a pod to sit in it's place? The pod could then house several gauges and switches if needed (eg for extra lighting). It could also be removed at a future point if you ever wanted to go back to standard.

Not much point of removing the "speaker grille" at least on mine as it's chock full of wiring connections.

I intend re-wiring my car and replacing the crap switches with some reliable modern ones and fitting some gauges at the same time, I intend getting rid of the air vents (although that might change)
I would be interested to see if anyone ha done this too.

My plans also include an uprated alternator (Maestro/Montego/Escort/Orion units should be a straight swap) and a new fuse box to separate the individual circuits where more than one circuit uses the same fuse for example if the fag lighter and hazards use the same fuse, they would then be on different fuses. Also planned are electric windows (looking at Stag window lifts or maybe an aftermarket kit), remote central locking/alarm, possibly heated seats, halogen headlight conversion and a few other goodies. As a precaution i will be reconditioning the alternator and starter motor as well. I've looked at the possibility of power steering too but most options look to be in the region of £1000-1500 so that might not happen lol!

im contemplating changing the clocks to a digital setup seen some on www.cbs.co.uk they look realy nice an i think they would do the job nicely has anyone fitted digital clocks [:D]

i looked into where i could put some extra gauges and i found the best place to be on top of the dash (seen here: http://www.tr8.co.uk/restoration/gauges.html)

Yes it's full of wires but with a little fiddling you can get extra stuff up there.

With it being a V8, i left the heater space well alone.

The gauges I have are easily readable whilst driving as well, im not too sure how looking down would help? could be dangerous. If you are anything like me - i like to drive to my gauges. :)

If you do use the top as your gauge pod be sure to buy the piece that angles the faces toward the driver.

I saw that - also saw an MG F electric PAS column with all the bits too. Apparently the MG F unit is good for fitting into cramped spaces and also comes with the ECU (i think!). Something i'm curious about Rob, why have you listed it with the Corsa rack? Is fitting the Corsa rack part and parcel of fitting the electric PAS or could the existing TR7 rack still be used?

By changing the upper column you can use the TR rack. Just have to connect the 2 by other means

Did someone mention gauges? You can never have too many in my opinion![:D]

At a pinch you could fir four gauges in the switch panel, although
3 was tight...

i like what you've done with the switch panel.

Got me thinking now :)

100% agree, can never have too many gauges. But i am running out of ideas for additional gauges... So far, i Have:

Volts
Clock
Rev counter
Amps
Engine Temp
Header Tank Temp
Fuel Economy
Air Temp
Oil Pressure
Speedo
Fuel

Can anyone think of any more that can go in via a SD1?
