New TR7

HI there, I have just bought my 2nd ever TR7, its a 2.0litre in green with a full length sunroof. if anyone has any advice as to issues that i need to look out for or if anyone wants to come round and help they are more than welcome. the car is a runner with mot this time. thank you for your time

Morning Jimmy and welcome!! You're beating me by 2 TR7s, i'm currently looking and joined here for advice and to maybe find a suitable car.
What i have found is a very friendly, knowledgeable bunch so you're certainly in the right place for Wedge shaped things!!

Is this a daily driver or second car? If every things working well enjoy. I would systematically take apart each electrical connection, clean with some contact cleaner rubbing it with a piece of cloth or brush, blowing out/off (with compressed air if you have a well stocked garage) and applying a thin film of dielectric grease. This can be done as time allows and can be done with just a little mechanical experience. Perusing these posts will tell you that many problems are dirty/corroded electrical connections of an thirty year old car without the sealed connections of a modern car. It can be as good an excuse to get you out of the house as polishing the car and while it won't make it any prettier it will make it more reliable.

Post a picture when you get a chance. There are "sticky's" that tell you how.

I got my TR7 with an MOT, jusgt check all the systems over, brakes and electics etc. You wont know its reliability until you run it, some things will fail some wont.

When I ran mine the alternator failed, water pump failed, sticking needle valves in the float chambers, advannce weight sticking in the distributor.

Check out hoses, coolant and fuel, anyhing perishable. The car needed some relays repalced and a brake slave cylinder replaced.

hi there, thanks for all the advice! I am based in Bristol UK, drove her home yesterday 250miles, ran sweet as a nut! maybe it could do with a tune and wheel balance and tracking which i shall hopefully have today. everything worked like it should which is good until I hit a bump and then the fuel gauge went off!! no biggie but the the fuel warning light still works so my guess is gauge has a loose connection??? and not the sender right??

FHC getting a rare car nowadays [:(] shame because IMHO they drive better than the DHC. If you get a chance pictures are always good.

As far as fuel gauge, poss conectors on tank but worth checking the connections on the back of the instrument cluster or the printed circuit itself.

Gauge problem is surely wiring connections at gas tank or more distant possibility under dash. See my previous post about wiring connections above.[8D]

There is a "sticky" at the top of this section about posting pictures. Can't wait to see them. Sounds like you have a good "base" car.

Very nice. What year is it? I notice that it has a late style bonnet. Later coupes are really hard to find, especially with the sliding roof.
