Naked Expansion Tank

Postby FI Spyder » 17 Apr 2011 04:07

I put on a new ($5) expansion tank to replace my original leaking one. Not one for bling but I decided to polish it instead of paint it. I kind of like it. It looks better than in pictures as the sun was behind some clouds and I had to use the flash. A homage to the pre war Rolls Royces that where built to last a hundred years. Only 70 more to go.[:p]

What do you think? I may change it back to the original black one when I get it fixed.

But at least this way it's a few grams lighter [:p]
Black wrinkle finish looks very nice, but then I am biased ...

Could always try chrome spray on it - that way if you don't like the look you've not wasted a lot of money getting it chromed!

Alternatively, why not get it anodised in whatever colour you like? Looks like you have red trim on the side stripes of your car so you could get it done red? Couldn't find any header tanks that have been red anodised but here's some bonnet pins to give you an idea of the colour :

And some bolts in blue and black :

Hope that gives you some ideas!

Cheers,

No I just used Wicked metal polish which puts leaves a slippery polish on it then added a few coats of car polish on that. It's just an experiment to see how long it lasts and how I like it 6 months down the line.

If I decide to keep it I'll clear coat it. I do have the red side strips but the other engine bay accents are robin's egg blue on the jubilee clips on the intake to injector hoses (original colour) that matches oil filter cannister (which you can't see well). Too many colours.

Don't try powder coating! One of member's who likes to bling things had his powder coated and all the solder joints bled out during the heating process.
