hardtop fixing......

Postby nervousnewowner » 10 Apr 2011 21:46

ok you all knew it was coming......

got the hardtop, brought it down strapped on top of the focus, must of looked a wonderful sight, rugby to merthyr at an average speed of 45mph........... and to add insult to injury the focus broke down 5 miles from home, think it was jealous......

but i digress, got top home, cleaned, and put on the car tonight, but it looks like its sitting above the body, same on windscreen, it has foam on front edge and around the back so this seems to be whats causing the gap, is the foam right or should it have a rubber seal? and how does it bolt by the doors? only came with two small l shaped bracket so think i'm missing something, mind you i have taken the softtop off as it was shot and didnt know if it stayed on like on an mgf.

any help/pics folks much appreciated, just waiting for rain now to see if car stays dry inside at last......

Look on the bright side Dave. All that money you saved on fuel travelling at 45mph, can now go towards repairing the Focus [:D] [:D].

My hardtop has two J shaped bolts threaded at one end. The J hooks through a ring bracket that fits to the hood hinge (see first picture) and the threaded end goes into a bracket on the hardtop itself.

My fitting was like Philips. Just two small angle-brackets bolted to part of the hood frame to secure J-Bolts, with a washer and a butterfly-nut.... Job Done!

The 'foam'? Not sure what that's all about: mine used to have rubber strip not dissimilar to door-seals.

right i just had a small l shaped bracket on each side of the top and as i'd taken my softtop off i just refitted a bolt and temporarily tie wrapped each side til i get to fix it properly, must admit i was expecting a rubber seal front and back too and the foam certainly threw me, soon as i get home from work in daylight will take a few pics to show you what mine is sitting like, help much appreciated though folks.....[:D]

Hard tops usually have rubber seals, kind of looks like some one jury rigged a foam seal raising it up too high. The foam would have to be closed cell foam or it will act like a sponge and hold moisture not a good thing on a TR7[:0].

I managed to pick up a hard top from PaulW last year.

That too is missing the J bolts(easy to find)and the correct moulded gasket to fit to the header rail and the rear deck.
I spoke to rimmers who apart from a few side windows now say they are out of stock.

Can anybody post some good pictures of the gaskets for us.

Cheers
Ian

Hope to see some of you on Sunday at the gunpowder Mills

Hey Dave, before you go throwing the soft top away, don't forget to take the release handles off the header rail.
There doesn't seem to be any on your new hard top [;)].

Hi Dave

You sure that's a 'real' Lenham? I'd need to check my old pics, but there's something slightly 'odd' looking about it, and the side windows look decidedly strange. Mine opened....
