Electrical Radiator Fan Motors

Does anyone know if the electrical fan motors in front of the radiator on the TR7 and the TR8 are interchangeable? The ones on my 7 are pulling too much current and keep blowing fuses. I have a set of TR8 fans in the shed. If they are the same, I will have the TR8 motors rebuilt and swap them out with the 7 fans.

Are they the same as the TR7 fans? They don't look like it from your photo.

Is this something that's just started happening or have you just fitted them? if they've been fitted for years and have just started causing problems then carry on as you suggested, fit new fans. usually when there's two fans they are switched independently. The Temp switch has a main feed in and two switched feeds out which operate one fan at say 85 deg and the other at 91 deg. with this in mind the start up current spike will be less than trying to start up both fans at the same time. If you're trying to start up both fans at the same time there will be a huge current spike which will wear the fuse out very quickly. I'd look at making sure it's wired correctly and check for corrosion first before changing motors / fans first. Maybe fit a tong tester on it to see how much current it's pulling? I know that relays get pitted and or corroded contacts which cause fuses to pop.

The fans assemblies are different but still have the same confusing electrical system of relays and grounding relays.........You might want to look into some aftermarket higher output lower draw fans.

I found that in both of my TR7's the fan bearings needed oiling. I just sprayed in some penetrating oil on the bearings/shafts and it cured them.

Took quite a bit of oil as it is difficult to get the spray to hit the bearings directly. It made a huge difference to the resistance to turning the fan blades by hand.

It is the 7 that is having problems. I keeps drawing down the amps and blowing fuses. There is a cross piece that makes it difficult to remove them. To fit new aftermarket fans, I will have to cut away the motor mounting brackets.

I though because I have a spare set of TR8 fans, I could just swap them out. But I can see from the photos that they are different sizes and motor body configuration.

Like Ed said I think if you soak the bearings in some penetrating fluid then oil them they should free up nicely and then will draw the proper amount of amps. Any one know what they should draw if operating properly?

most motors have the nomenclature written on a sticker or plate. at the very least it will say the power consumption in watts, if it does then watts divided by the voltage (measured at the battery whilst the engine is running) will give you the amps.

Found the problem.

The fan relay in with all the A/C relays was fried! Fans drawing too much current. Replaced the relay and they work. Now to make a better fix.
