Silly washer pump question!

Postby Dave Dyer » 01 Apr 2011 09:36

Hi All,

I was just about to fit my washer pump and suddenly thought..which way up does it go? I thought it was something obvious that I would know but when it came to fitting, I had a great big question mark over my head!

Does anyone know? Maybe without looking at yours first! It stumped me!!

Cheers, Dave

Hi Pete,

So your saying motor at the bottom, pipes at the top. I had guessed the other way round, I'll fit it like you say.

Thanks, Dave

Keeping with the normal BL Engineering Dept., it probably was mounted with the motor in the lower position. This is so any leaks from the pump will flow into the motor and short it out, there by releasing great quantities of Lucas Smoke.

I usually keep a reserve tank of Lucas Smoke in the boot just for these emergencies!

AHEM!!!

May we please not heap yet more unjust abuse apon the brilliant engineering feats of that underfunded and overworked herd of British Leyland engineering departments?

Kindly Mr Dyer, our JCLAY is merely fooling with you. The pump is usually installed with the engine oriented in a sideways position here in our machine shed.

Oooopsie! I thought it said 'Water Pump'.

Never mind.

Maybe I should clean these bifocals more often.

My original non-working one was motor on top. The replacement I took from a parts car was also motor up.

Thanks everybody and thanks beans for the photo, I've looked everywhere for a photo of the washer pump (books, google, tr7 sites, own photos etc) and couldn't find a single one!

I've mounted it motor up and because the daft rubber mountings had perished I've attached it to the wiper blanking plate.

Cheers, Dave

Those rubber mounting nuts crumbled on mine too, but I found out they are important. Without them the vibrations from the pump motor were LOUD. Surprisingly, I was able to find those exact rubber fittings at the local Ace Hardware.
