205/60/13 Tyre

Postby RUDDY » 30 Mar 2011 22:11

Anyone running this size tyre on factory alloys, just stripped a set of alloys of old tyres and they were 205's, thought they may be a bit wide for a 5.5" rim, looked ok tho

Cheers, Paul

Been running 205s for years. They are fine for street and are very close in diameter to the stock 185/70/13s.

Mines been running 205's for the last 25 years, they fit the alloys just fine. The only problem I've noticed is the outer edge of the front tyre catching on the mudflap on full lock, easily sorted with an extra bracket on the mudflap. [:)]

I had 205's on the standard steel wheels for years. Then I was advised that the tyre would not perform as well as a 185 on these wheels because there wasn't any room left for the tyre to move around on the rim. I switched to 185's and I have to say, I think the car does actually handle more surefootedly than it did with 205's.

Hi

I've had 205s on since 1989 and they were standard issue on the Ford Capri 2.8i. I used to put on Uniroyals and I thought there was an improvement over the 185s but that might have been down initially to new replacing old. I think they look good which may not be the best reason to buy tyres(!)

Must get out more.

I have 185 13s on the front, & 205 13s on the back of the 7, & that with stiff roll bars, & the rest stock is the best I've found on the 7.

Somehow it's easier to both kick, & control the back with the 205s, & the front grip is better with the 185s. I found 205s on the front lacked bite on turn in.

I was told and have experienced the issue of using a 205 on a 13x5.5 inch rim before and it causes side wall wabble. This for the street is not an issue but when you push the car hard it feels loose. I bought a set of 13x7 rims and best fit was a 205/55/13 and yes they make them......well the made them at one point, for track and autocross that is the best size rim for a 205 but as mentioned prior the 205 when used hard will have some give and side to side movement.

Every decent tyre manufacturer should have info on their site which states the optimum rim width for a certain tyre size.
But 205 tyres on 5,5" rims is far from the optimum for 13" diameter rims.

On info sites like Beans is suggesting, a 5.5" wheel is usually the minimum wheel for a 205mm wide tire and a 7.5" wheel is usually listed as a maximum wheel width.

One item I remember reading from years ago about tire widths and wheel widths is that for performance driving a wheel should be at least 80% of the width of a tire. A 7" wheel is about 84% of the width of a 205mm wide tire. By comparison, a 5.5" wheel is about 66% of the width of the same tire. The article also went into giving a performance tire a proper "shoulder" under neath it with the wheel and keeping the sidewalls nearly vertical and not angled (in either direction). I think it was an article from one of the tire experts at the Tire Rack.

I had 205/65R13's on my stock alloys for several years and if pushed hard enough you could feel the sidewalls flex a little. Now with a 7" wheel I can't get that feeling anymore. The shorter sidewall 45 vs 65 doesn't hurt either but the theory is that the same 205mm tire would perform better on a 7" wide wheel than it would on a 5.5" wheel.
