Spax nut size

Postby Vegas_M » 30 Mar 2011 23:10

Hi all,

I have a used set of adjustable Spax strut inserts that I want to use, but am missing the nuts at the top of the shaft that holds the springs and cap to the strut assembly.

I thought they were metric 12x1.25, but they don't fit (too tight). I also tried 1/2 NF, but they don't fit either (too loose).

Anyone know what is the correct nut for the top of the strut?

Thanks,

Martin

OK solved.

The original Woodheads I took out used a 7/16-NC nut. A quick glance showed the spax were different, and closer to 1/2". I did try a metric 12x1.5 but it was way too coarse.

So, it turns out the previous owner (I guess) tried to put the wrong nuts on these strut inserts and bunged up the top of the threads a bit (close inspection with my bi-focals on - ahh old age). This is why the "correct" metric 12x1.25 nuts wouldn't go on. I cleaned up the threads with a metric die, and viola, they screwed on and tightened down fine.

The joys of old cars and pre-used parts....
