I believe you have to take a feed from the main beam via a switch, then to the switching side of the relay. That way you can knock the spots off when not required and just run the main beam.

If it is spotlights, then through a separate switch and to the high beam circuit so they only come on with high beams.

If they are fig lights, there should be wiring in place behind the bumper so that you can use the first position on the fog lamp switch. Although bizarrely with mine (I assume all are the same) they do not run through the headlamp circuit, meaning they are on all the time and you have to remember to switch them off with the fog lamp switch.

edit - should point out as ww has said - through a relay.

For the MOT you must have a warning lamp to show when the spotlamps are on. They should be connected via the normal hi beam switch but can have a switch in the circuit so you can disable the extra spots and just have standard hi beam only, but this is not compulsory. You need warning lamps for additional lighting, including rear fog lamps but not front.

On my Spitfire I have separate fused wiring to the spots, these are switched via a relay form the normal hi beam wiring. The warning lamp is the normal hi beam lamp. So the lamps come on with the standard hi beam.

Many years ago a MOT tester told me that if I had spots the normal headlamps had to stay on dipped, but he was wrong.

My front spotlights work independantly from the headlights. If the lights fail to pop up at least I've got a back up to get home at night. [:)]

Your warning lamp can be in the form of an illuminated switch.
I also fit a spare relay next to the operational one in case of failure on my rally cars.

Hello Dave, the engine work isn`t going at the moment, but within the next two weeks I intend to have that head off. Famous last words and all that
